Guest guest
Hi Katja, I think your post was incredibly clear and thoughtful!! In fact I agree with you that if it is a dental problem primarily, then the surgery may be more cosmetic. But I think those cases are extemely few and far between. Usually from what I see at least on this board, they are more considerable jaw problems (I may be wrong, but I think Class 11 is overbite, and Class 111 is underbite) that have a cosmetic component. I agree that cosmesis is usually a motivating factor in having the surgery. I really really agree with that. It is at the bottom of my list for doing the surgery, but I have to admit that it is still an important consideration for me as well! lol I think it is the reason I am going with lengthening the upper jaw in addition to moving it, though there were functional reasons as well, I primarily went with that one for the cosmetic repair. But like I said, there were functional reasons too. I guess what it all comes down to is that we each have to really grill our dentists, OD's (I went to three consults to make SURE this was necessary for me), OS's, insurance reps etc etc to be really clear with ourself just exactly why we are doing this and include the cosmetic result without making that the only consideration. It is such a time intensive and expensive surgery, not to mention a long recovery and lifetime of review to make sure the corrections are effective, that we really owe it to ourselves to be clear in our reasons and choices. Thanks again Katja!
