Guest guest
Hi , I live in Eastbourne (Uk), just thought I'd reply as it's nice to hear from English people in a similar situation ( I don't always understand some of the phrases and terms that some other people leave on this site ). I'm exactly 7 weeks post-op today. I had upper and lower, the surgeon didn't know if I'd need my chin altered until he was actually performing the op, but as it turned out, I didn't. All I can really advise is try not to worry about it too much - I wasted sooo much time worrying about having the operation and to be honest, it's not really a big deal. The pain was virtually non- existant. Ok, I blew up like a balloon ( I was nicknamed Moomin - not sure if you remember them? but that's what I looked like! ) and there were a few scary moments, but I really tried to stay positive and think that helped. I was black and blue right down to my cleavage, with a black eye to match - nice eh! But, I just kept telling myself " this is what I've been waiting nearly 3 years for, all the work that's gone into this project i.e. braces on, wisdoms out, every 6 weeks to the orthodontist etc etc, and just a few weeks of discomfort and looking rough then it's all over and done with for the rest of my life ( fingers crossed, pray to God etc etc ). I'm surprised you're being wired shut - I was getting the impression that was just an American thing, but obviously not. I had a " splint " put in whilst still under and was banded shut so I was all closed up when I awoke. A week after the surgery I had the splint removed, and was just left banded shut. I still am now and will be for at least another 3 weeks. I'm just starting to attempt to eat things properly again. I had the best Indian I've ever had in life on Saturday night - ummm, so good. You've got it all to come. Anyway, I wish you well. If you have any queries just ask. Good Luck !! > > > --------------------------------- > Hello All > > I've been reading the posts here for about six months, > but this is my > first post, as I have finally got a surgery date - > 22nd November, and I > got my hooks (called cleats in the UK) on Thursday. > Reading everyone's > posts has helped me so much so far, and also provided > some relief to my > poor friends, family and work colleagues who have had > to listen to me > going on about it all for almost three years! Guest guest
Hi Gemma Thanks for your message and good luck wishes - it is good to hear from people in the UK. I live in a shared house and a couple of months ago a new housemate called moved in and it turns out that she had very similar surgery in 1992. It sounds like the procedures have changed an awful lot since then though. I too was surprised about being wired shut when I first found out. The surgeon had only talked about lower, then when I went to see him in June he said he'd need to do upper to in order to get the best result (he's the expert, I'm not going to argue!). Apparently, my upper really needs to come forward, but I have a stupidly small (and very unforgiving) nose and it would end up being snub, so he's just going to tilt it up at the back - I think this might be to solve my open bite (it made sense when i saw him demonstrating it with the models). I was freaked out to begin with, but I soon realised that six weeks out of my life is nothing, and plenty of other people have it done. I'm worried about not being able to yawn, or sing in the car on my way to work, but at least my ear drums will get a holiday. I'm glad to hear you managed an Indian at seven weeks - it is my company Christmas dinner dance seven weeks after my op (fortunately for me no-one got round to booking it in time for Christmas!) so that will be my focus for when I am unwired. Thanks for your advice about not worrying too much - I was obsessing about it a while back, but I think I'm over that now. At the moment I'm just excited, and busy planning all my pre-op parties, meals out, etc. My poor mum isn't quite so fortunate and came home from Tesco on Friday with a blender so she can practice (I'll be staying with my parents for a while, but my dad's really squeamish and I don't think he's looking forwad to it at all!). Your account of the bruising made me laugh - and I do remember Moomins! - I am hopefully going to the christening of my best friend's little boy 10 days after my op, but won't go if I'm looking like something to give the children nightmares for weeks.... > > > > > > --------------------------------- > > Hello All > > > > I've been reading the posts here for about six months, > > but this is my > > first post, as I have finally got a surgery date - > > 22nd November, and I > > got my hooks (called cleats in the UK) on Thursday. > > Reading everyone's > > posts has helped me so much so far, and also provided > > some relief to my > > poor friends, family and work colleagues who have had > > to listen to me > > going on about it all for almost three years!
