Guest guest
Hi everyone, I had my surgury on Tuesday (so now day 4 post-op) and we discovered that I am allergic to morphine and vicadin so they said no narcotics for me. The motrine works ok for about 2hrs. then it is four hours of struggle and I can't sleep much more then 2hrs. at a time. Any advice? I am iceing as much as I can stand it and drinking as much water as possible but feel like my head is going to explode Also, have PUT ON 9 pounds since surgery!! How is that possible? Do the steroids make that happen?
Guest guest
Hi , You are over the worst now. the swelling will start to slowly come down now. I am 19 post-op now, and I still have a considerable amount of swelling still to go. I never had a lot of pain, so never need it a lot of pain relief, but at night time I took a kids medicine called pain stop night time which helped me sleep at night time. You might need to ask your doctor for some sleeping tables to help you through the first week. Also I was told that after the first 24-48 hours the ice does not help with the swelling, so I never continued after the 4th day as it did not make a difference to me. Hope you get some rest soon. Keep well. > Hi everyone, > I had my surgury on Tuesday (so now day 4 post-op) and we discovered > that I am allergic to morphine and vicadin so they said no narcotics > for me. Guest guest
Hi , I am so sorry about the allergies. I have those too, and am allergic to Morphine and Percocet. I am sorry that not having them available to you makes it more difficult to keep ahead of the discomfort. I really feel for you about this. I am hoping as the swelling subsides, the discomfort may ease up for you as well. You are probably having a lot of swelling which is what I am sure you are seeing on the scale. I haven't had this surgery yet, but I have had other surgeries, and when I have had a surgery that has significant swelling, I get that kind of " weight " gain also. And having allergies and having been on prednisone many times, I also am aware that some steroids can also have some swelling issues. Have you contacted your OS about the discomfort level you are having? Maybe let the OS know how much the scales are reading higher too. Maybe there is something else you could try if this doesn't let you sleep well. Just a thought. Will watch for your posts. Hugs, Fran > Hi everyone, > I had my surgury on Tuesday (so now day 4 post-op) and we discovered > that I am allergic to morphine and vicadin so they said no narcotics > for me. Guest guest
Try liquid Tylenol. Some folks find it works way better than stronger painkillers. (If it's a children's prep, you may need to adjust the dose, though.) Ask your docs for help, for sure! And ask whether it's appropriate to switch to heat, instead of ice. Swelling goes with the turf -- but I'm sorry you're suffering. And I hope it will all soon get better. Meantime, pamper yourself, and let others pamper you, too. Bubbly baths. Guilty pleasures of whatever sort you enjoy -- trashy books, teevee you'd never waste time on, a cup of expensive tea or hot chocolate, if you can manage. Maybe even a new set of high-count sheets! Take care, and I'm hoping it will all be better soon! Guest guest
Hi , I use 2 extra strength tylenol - I crush them up very fine, mix with water and shoot them down. They seem to do the trick. At night I take an Adavan pill - anti-anxiety, which my OS prescribed so I don't grind my teeth at night. He wanted to give me Elavil, which is an anti-depressant, but my system doesn't like those very much. Supposedly, after 48 hours ice doesn't help with swelling anymore, you need heat. I've got a microwavable heat pack from the drug-store that I use on my face. I'm 2.5 weeks post-op and I still use it, it helps relax your muscles and feels nice on your face too. Good luck with everything - the first week is the hardest!
