Guest guest
Tammy I'm so sorry to hear of these recent bowel obstructions. I have had this happen three times since my RNY all caused by " internal hernias " - no adhesions in my case. I had my RNY 03/27/02 and had the first obstruction/hernia three weeks later - 04/19/02. Then, March 2003, was the second. And, I just had another one 10/06/03. I, too, am terrified it will happen again. This time, my surgeons put a suture line around my bowels to " hold them in place " . They think it will never happen again, but, to be honest, I have a hard time believing that because they said last time in March. With this obstruction, I became malnourished and left the hospital with a feeding tube for a month and am still a little underweight even now. I can relate to having them not really believe you - I was complaining of pain and inability to eat for a month and had been thru a series of tests and everything was negative. They even tried to put me on Elavil (an antidepressant). As for the future, I know this probably isn't much reassurance for you, but I have had to learn to just take life one day at a time and try not to focus on " what if it happens again " . I just know in the future, if I do feel that things are not right, I will be more insistent on the testing they do and how quickly it is done so as not to get so debilitated. If you want to talk, I would be happy to give you my phone number. You are not alone. Sandy Boca Raton, FL postop ~ 03/27/02 265/
