Many

“experts” feel giving out credit card numbers over the phone is

safer – IF you are in a safe environment when you make the call and also trust

the company. Be careful if you are using a cell phone or land line out in

public where you can easily be overheard. I often pass by people on cell

phones at stores and at my work place (public library) giving out credit card

numbers and social security numbers that everyone around them can easily

hear. If I was a criminal, I would find it easy to get the

information. Fortunately I’m a person of integrity [grin].

I

don’t think there is any method of using a credit card number that is

absolutely safe. We just have to be vigilant and check our credit card

statements thoroughly and carefully.

Using

a check or mail order isn’t always an option, either, and may not

be any safer. I do use this option if I am purchasing from an online

supplier that doesn’t have a current security certificate and also doesn’t

use PayPal. Then I have to hope that the mail arrives as expected and

there are good people working in the mailroom!
