Guest guest
Bernadette yes you need to join the exercise class for 2 reasons first because of the cellulitis, if that is why they want you to join the second and most important reason [in my opinion] is because of the pulmonary fibrosis once you start exercising, you will find that you might feel better with the fibrosis issues i can't explain it well, but i understand it: when you exercise, your muscles need less oxygen, so there is more oxygen going to your lungs, in the past, mary beth has helped me out with this explanation i usually don't notice the difference while i am exercising, but if i don't go for a period of time, i notice how quickly i decondition then when i return to exercise, it sometimes takes even longer to get back to where i was exercise is one of the most important things people with pulmonary fibrosis can do for themselves and i am the one who hates exercise when i first started at rehab, the RT said she wanted to be able able to do 20 minutes on the treadmill, i thought she was "nuts" but eventually i did achieve that even if i don't do a full work out, i still do the treadmill, or as some people in this group used to say, "the dreadmill" if you can't do the treadmill, there is the nu step, where you sit and pedal like a bicycle and use your arms to push these things back and forth sounds like you need the cardiovascular exercises at pulmonary rehab, they checked my SAT, blood pressure, my heart, and gave me O2 to use for exercise when rehab was done, i went to maintenance, where they checked my blood pressure and my SAT, and gave me o2 to use for for exercise the hours at maintenance were limited, so i switched to the wellness center in the same hospital they still check my blood pressure, i have my own oximeter to check my SAT, and i have to supply my own O2, some people say why don't i go to a regular gym where it is cheaper because i like being in the hospital setting just in case..... the phisio therapy dept at the hospital where you go will monitor you while you exercise and you will gradually be able to build your self up you might even be able to walk from the bedroom to the kitchen a little faster, but still with o2, Pink Joyce R (IPF 3/06) IFA 5/09 Pennsylvania Donate Life Listed 1/09 Inactive 4/09 www.transplantfund.org--- Subject: Re:crawl before we can walk! To: Breathe-Support Date: Friday, January 8, 2010, 9:43 AM Hi Friends, What do you think about this ? In the last 3 months I've had cellitius in my left leg twice the 2d of which is just starting to clear up now. The Phiso-therapy dept at the hospital would like me to join an exercise group 2 days a week tues. and thurs. 1 hour each for 10 weeks......... at the moment I cannot walk from my bedroom to the kitchen without o2 and it also takes me a month of Sundays I am exaggerating this a bit. I do really need to loose the weight and I am doing that I have lost a little over 2 1/2 stone, but it's slow going. I really do not feel strong enough to commit myself to th ese classes, they don't seem to want to take no for an answer. The other thing is In the month of October 2009 I got pnemounia and my lung collasped and I spent 5 day in ICU and 5 days on the ward. I just think it's too soon. What if any thoughts do you have. Guest guest
Bernie, My suggestion would be that you go ahead and try the exercise class. They would likely not be inviting you if they didn't think you could do it. So you go and you do what you can. Use your oxygen, make sure your O2 level stays above 90. (Do you have an oximeter?) You may not be able to do every activity in the class and that's ok, you do what you can. I think you might be amazed at what you can do in a relatively short period of time. Obviously it's your decision and you know yourself and your body best but it might be worth giving it a try. Exercise is not a competition, it is a quest to fuller range of motion and heightened endurance. As Beth said, use your oxygen. There may be some breathing techniques that would help you as well, check with the staff offering the exercise classes. With your oximeter you can check to see if you need to increase you oxygen for certain exercises. I don't need any oxygen for most anaerobic exercises, but need more oxygen for some of the aerobic exercises. Watch it carefully. Make sure your heart can take it... check with your doctor just to be on the safe side.Stefani 61 year old UtahnILD 2/2006, NSIP (fibrotic) 10/2009, Diabetes II 2/2006, Sleep Apnea 4/2009>> Bernie,> My suggestion would be that you go ahead and try the exercise class.
