Guest guest
, There are plenty of us with allergies. I, too, am allergic to almost all dust, pollen, weeds, trees, etc. I get allergy shots for my allergies, which I just put on hold until I recovered from the surgery. I'm back getting them now. Usually the first few days you are under the effects of the steroids given for swelling, so the allergies aren't too bad. Most of my problems came 3 days after surgery weren't related to my usual allergies, but a combination of gunk in throat from intubation, possible allergic reaction to codeine and anemia after surgery, which caused some breathing problems. Once I got beyond that (about day 10) I did fine. Then started back on allergy shots about 5-6 weeks post op when I noticed one morning my peak flow was down slightly. I did though start my allergy meds earlier. Singulair, etc. Depending on type of surgery you'll be having and whether you're wired, or rubber banded, you'll be able to at least take liquid forms of medications. By the 3rd day post op I was able to take oral meds as I was only rubber banded and could open mouth enough to take a pill. But if you can't liquid benadryl, and other meds are available. Just make sure your surgeon is aware of your allergies. Because of my sleep apnea (hopefully cured by surgery) and history of asthma they did keep my airway tubes in until the next morning.
