Guest guest
Thank you Ray. It is my understanding that some wls cause protein malabsorption and for those who have the severe malabsorption do what you have to do. However, once the protien you ingest is absorbed and going into storage, well, we convert nutrients and store them just as anyone else. MAYBE we are not as special as we would like to think we are. My support group had in a woman who was one of the first RNY patients in 1978. She has maintained a good weight, and is healthy and takes only 2 flintstones vits a day . period. My group BTC does not push protein shakes, encourages us to get it from food. We have a lot of long termers. they are doing great, BTC has a great record of long term success. they do Literally thousands of these procedures all over the US. They have a great program. If protien supplements were so absolutely necessary they would be pushing it. JUST maybe since there are so many versions of surgeries going on there are different requirements based on how your surgery was done. Someone who has 5 feet bypassed is going to have more malabsorption than some one with 2 feet bypassed. A BPD is very malabsorptive , which was my deciding factor to have RNY. I didn't want to deal with the higher rate of malabsorption, I'd rather have a little more restriction than malnutrition. Many docs consider RNY to be primarily restrictive. not very malabsorptive. If I have learned anything in life it is that we are all different. and have different needs.
