Guest guest
My daughter is two weeks old and both sides of her head is already a little bit flat. I've been rotating her head to sleep on the left, back, and the right sides during each nap. But she has preferences to sleep on the sides so she always manages to turn. My 2 year old son had brachy when he was a baby and ended up in a helmet. I'm trying to avoid the same thing happening again. What are the best ways to prevent this getting worse? I already try to put her on tummy times twice a day for a few minutes. I'm currently put her to sleep on a pillow that has a hole in the middle. But afraid if I don't rotate, the back will be flat eventually as well. Any tips will be appreciated! Thanks! Elaine
Guest guest
Hi Elaine, 2 weeks is very young. I don't think you need to worry yet. If anything try to observe if she seems to have full range of motion in her neck. If not tort may be an issue and eventually stretches may be needed to help. I'm not sure how early you can start those things, but 2 weeks seems too early to me. It is good you are varying her head position, but I think that is all you can do for now. You can also use a baby carrier rather than a bouncer, swing or carseat (or course carseat is needed in the car, but don't keep her in it for naps etc). I wouldn't recommend any pillow for such a young baby. I'm not an expert, but I would wait a bit. A little flattening is normal from what I know. I think as her head grows you want to make sure it seems to be growing in all directions rather than asymmetrically. Instead of doing too much now I would take photos of her head shape to see how it changes over the next few weeks (take pictures every one or 2 weeks). Also look at pictures taken from the front to see if she keeps her head to one side. If you nurse her do it on both sides, and if she has a strong preference that could also indicate some stiffness in the neck (torticollis) that you could look into. Tort is a big contributor to plagio. My daughter had brachy too. In her case she had a lot of growth from 0 to 6 mo (way more than usual since she went from 50th percentile to 95 for head circumference). Also I didn't know about varying her head position, and she loved to sleep facing directly toward the ceiling. I could have worked on the head position, but given the extra growth I'm not sure I could have prevented it entirely. -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > My daughter is two weeks old and both sides of her head is already a little bit flat.
