Guest guest
Hi Jacqui, As I told Amy, I had my lower jaw moved forward 8mm. I also burst into tears when I was told I would need surgery. I thought braces would fix it, but this was not so. Having your mouth wired shut means that the surgeon will basically weave wires around your braces so that you can't open your mouth. It doesn't involve poking you anywhere (which is what I pictured as soon as I heard the words " wired shut " !). The actual surgery itself was not painful for me at all. I never needed to use my pain medicine. After my 4 weeks of being wired shut, my surgeon took off the wires and then banded me shut for 2 weeks. At that appointment, he had me open my mouth to get my splint out (it's a plastic retainer-like thing they put in between your top and bottom teeth), and that part hurt right up to my ear on one side because my mouth was not used to being opened. This is my only complaint, because that pain was pretty intense. But I'm a unique case..not everyone has that, and actually not everyone has a splint either. I would definitely recommend it! Good Luck! -Ash
