Guest guest
I have plates and screws in place in my jaw, after reading some posts it seems like if you have plates and screws you dont get rubberbands or are wired shut? so sometimes when they operate do they not use plates and screws? I thought they always did!! im wired shut right now but my surgeon said probably only for a week, i didnt realize when they operate they sometime dont use plates and screws, so what do they do, put the jaw in the correct postion and wire things shut and thats it? Guest guest
Actually, there is a type of lower jaw surgery which requires the jaw to be wired shut. It is an I.V.R.O. or IntraOral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy and it can only be done for mandibular set-back. It isn't used nearly as much as the BSSO, because the BSSO can be used for both set-back and advancement. The IVRO has less of a chance of disturbing the major nerve that runs thru the mandible (that nerve is known as the Inferior Alveolar Nerve or IAN), because the incision is made farther back which in turn results in little or no numbness issues. I don't believe that the IVRO uses plates and screws, but the mandible is probably stabilized by some type of internal wiring, as well as wiring the mouth shut. The reason why I know a little bit about this is because an oral surgeon that I went to for a surgery consult back in the early 1980's wanted to do the IVRO on me, but when he told me that I would have my jaws wired shut for six to eight weeks, I decided not to have the surgery. ~~~~ Diane (Idaho) > > I have plates and screws in place in my jaw, after reading some posts > it seems like if you have plates and screws you dont get rubberbands > or are wired shut? so sometimes when they operate do they not use > plates and screws?
