Lizzie just got out of her DocBand.  She was 5 months (3 adjusted) when she started.  She is now 7 months (we were VERY lucky & caught her in a growth spurt - she only needed it for 7 weeks!).  We were diligent about putting her on her back before the helmet because of the possibility of SIDS.  Once she got her DocBand we were less diligent, mostly because the helmet gave her a bit more " space " between her & the mattress.  I guess we figured it kept her from suffocating against the mattress. She also started flipping.

Anyway, long story short, she sleeps like a DREAM on her tummy and her physician told us as long as she can flip herself back over it's ok.  She also told us that once they start flipping themselves the SIDS potential is *drastically* reduced.  Also, the DocBand doesn't affect her breathing at all and it was like she wasn't wearing anything.  They are so resilient!

I would advise anyone against adding anything to a mattress.  I think adding padding is a breathing hazard, such as bumpers.  Lizzie tends to bump her head on her crib but I will still not add bumpers.  I'm still afraid she'll roll up against the side of the crib & suffocate.

Just my 2 cents!! Good luck!AmyOn Tue, Mar 15, 2011 at 8:28 PM, curlyqhawaii <curlyqhawaii@...> wrote:

My son is getting his helmet today. :) I am very excited but a little nervous on how he will do through the night. We just got him to sleep through the night about a month ago so, I don't want to mess up that. He will be 11 months next week and rolls onto his tummy to sleep. Will sleeping on his tummy be effected by wearing the helmet? I read in other posts that some people put either foam or a soft blanket under the mattress sheet to give them more padding. WOuld you suggest this for a tummy sleeper? I guess my concern with that would be SIDS.

If you really want to keep the baby on their back longer, this is the only thing that has been proven safe by a hospital to use in a crib. http://www.guardian-sleeper.com/

We used it and it worked so well for months until he got so strong that he could twist it around. But our baby has been in the 99th percentile for weight and height since he was 2 months old and has been jumping around since birth, so he is an anomaly. A regular baby should not be able to twist it around like he did at 10 months old. Now, we kept him on his back longer than normal because he was diagnosed with central sleep apnea. Otherwise, once babies start to turn over they supposedly are at less risk for SIDS.

Hi,Since your son is already sleeping on his tummy, he will probably find a way to make it work for him(might be tough at first, though.)My daughter was younger when she got her helmet, so the band actually kept her from sleeping on her tummy(she also had tort & issues w/ rolling over before PT.) Once the tort was resolved and the band came off, she became a tummy sleeper(and a much better sleeper overall,) which I suspect she was all along, but I diligently put her on her back to prevent SIDS. Luckily, the risk of SIDS is not a huge concern after 8 months, but suffocation and strangulation are concerns long after the SIDS risk is over. I would not recommend putting anything in a baby's crib that could be hazardous. Better to be safe than sorry. Don't worry, your son will adjust as many

banded babies have found ways to sleep on their tummies.Good luck!-AmyFrom: curlyqhawaii <curlyqhawaii@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Tue, March 15, 2011 8:28:10 PMSubject: Tummy sleeper
