I used the loreal blueberry and strawberry shampoos. I would lather it on my daughters head and let it sit while she played and I washed the rest of her. Then I would rinse the shampoo. Also there is a higher percent of rubbing alcohol that you can get at some pharmacies.

Good luck,

Tips for cleaning Starband and eliminating smell?

My son got his Starband last Wednesday (he's 10 months). This monring after his 2nd full night of wearing it, I noticed the band and his head have really started to smell funky.I have been cleaning once or twice a day with the rubbing alcohol, and sometimes blowdry the helmet on the cool setting. We were also instructed to take off the helmet every 4 hours during the day and wipe down his head, the helmet, let dry for 5-10 mintues and then put it back on. Should I not be using any water to wipe down the helmet? Also, with twins, I was bathing them every other day. Our orthodist said not to change his routine and over irritate his head, but now I'm thinking I have to wash his hair every night?Any other tips are much appreciated.

I clean the band daily and use the rubbing alcohol as directed. I take it off daily for an hour and clean with the rubbing alcohol. The alcohol does take away the smell. I also wash my daughter's hair everyday. Although I would have preferred not to have to do that, it seems necessary because of the smell and build up of the sweat from the day. My daughter has been in her band for 10 weeks now and we have stuck with the routine of only 1 hour off for cleaning the band and bathing/washing hair of my daughter. This seems to be the only way it works for us.

After like week 2 I did notice the horrible funky smell, but then it went away. So it might be a temporary thing. I also only wash her hair once a week and there's no smells now really at all. I wash the Hanger band with johnson's baby soap.KimFrom: <mmcclure99@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Tue, November 23, 2010

I was told not to use anything except rubbing alcohol to clean my son's DOC

band. I found that I needed to shampoo my son's hair every day and make sure it

was completely dry before putting his band back on. I also cleaned his band with

rubbing alcohol 2x a day instead of once and set it in front of a fan or a/c to

dry. It was part our routine first thing in the morning and right before bed.

Again, I made sure the band was completely dry before putting it back on. Each

time I changed his diaper, I wiped the band out and dried his head with a dry

towel (no water or cleaning agent). If he got rashy on his sideburns, I cleaned

the rashy area with rubbing alcohol 1x day. Cranial Tech did not recommend this

since rubbing alcohol irritates some babies' skin, but it worked really for us.

It all sounds like a pain, but it became part of our routine, so I hardly

thought about it after a while.

Hi,

I have the starband and the smell is not going to go away because you have this helmet over the hair 23 hours a day. So that means sweat that is kept in. So I wash my daughters hair everyday when I take the helmet off to clean it because her hair needs to be shampooed after all the sweat and the smell of the hair. I don't know how clean the helmet would be if I cleaned it but not the hair and then put dirty hair back in the helmet. My daughter has a LOT of hair and so it requires that. So I take it off and clean it and then there's no smell in the band. But of course the next 23 hours it comes off again and needs to be cleaned. Yes it smells again and then you clean it and the smell is gone. Its a daily helmet off, smelly helmet, then clean helmet. I would check with your orthotist or whomever you go to and ask about cleaning it. My place specifically said use alcohol and it does work.

We used rubbing alcohol once a day and bathed daily - the smell did build up, but nothing really bad. We had our band in the summer as well as the fall and some of those hot days it smelled horrible compared to now. Our tech advised us to put it in the direct sunlight for 1 hour and it helped so much - if you have a sunny area you might try that. We were advised to do rubbing alcohol on the rashes that were scratched on rashes by her fingernails - this helped dry them out and to heal. However if they got too bad we were advised to take the helmet off to let them heal. Ours never got too bad with a couple days of rubbing alcohol. Good luck! From: stephaniebilliel <SBilliel@...>Subject: Re: Tips for cleaning Starband and eliminating smell?Plagiocephaly Date: Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 8:36 PM

Thanks for the tips everyone. I did go out and buy the 91% alcohol last night

and sat the helmet in front of a fan after cleaning it - that does seem to work.

I may need to get some stronger smelling shampoo. I use California Baby now and

it smells good, but his hair still had a slight smell even after shampooing

twice.

Hi . My daughter Ella got her DOC band on two weeks ago and we were

instructed to wash her hair everyday, and clean the band with rubbing alcohol

ONLY. I do this by putting alcohol on a wash cloth and scrubbing the inside of

the helmet while she is in the tub. The band has to then dry naturally on its

own, once my daughters hair and her helmet are both dry after about an hour.

Both her and the helmet are good to go. She hasnt smelled at all and she sweets

a lot during the night. I was instructed to never let the helmet get wet with

water, but the rules may be different for a starband. Hope that helps a little!

:)

I would definitely recommend shampooing daily. I didn't do this w/ my daughter at first and she got a fungus on her scalp(she wore her plastic helmet spring into summer, so the weather was hot and humid.) We used Selsun Blue and it took care of the fungus immediately. I also noticed it worked great at cleaning the bacteria from the hair/scalp(it's anti-bacterial) and not just covering up the smell. The shampoo's effects lasted for days. I think our ped said we could use the Selsun Blue about once every 1-2 weeks. It's safe as that is what the ped said they recommend using for newborns when they have cradle cap. I just used 's baby shampoo daily and then used the Selsun Blue once about every ten days. I hope this helps.Good luck!-AmyFrom: stephaniebilliel <SBilliel@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Tue, November 23, 2010 9:36:03 PMSubject: Re: Tips for cleaning Starband and eliminating smell?
