Guest guest
Hi everyone, Thank you for all the help sorting out the Downs and Autism questions. It sounds like everyone was describing Seth to me! The older he gets, the more confused I get. :-) It is such a comfort to know that so many of you have gone through these feelings and questions too, and that your experiences can help the rest of us " newbies. " It seems like most of the kids on this list are on some form of medication, for so many different reasons. Seth doesn't need any meds.. He doesn't seem to have the intensity of the Autism that your children seem to have, yet they say he has severe Autism. I guess I have a lot of learning to do! Seems to me, the more I read and learn about this, the dumber I get. I keep thinking I understand something, then " poof " ... I don't get it anymore! Very confusing to this old brain. We are taking Seth in for pretest tomorrow for his heart surgery next week. Please keep us in your prayers. So glad everyone's prayers were answered for and all the others who have had the added stress of these medical problems. Thanks again for all the input. Guest guest
Janet, thanks for the prayers. They say it's simple surgery for the heart, for them maybe, but not for us! Seth was born with an ASD (hole in the upper chamber). We took him to Boston Childrens Hospital last November to have it fixed. They were going to use the " star flex " experimental procedure but after all the testing and knocking him out for some trans type echo, they discovered that the hole was too big and off center. So now he has to be opened up to make the repair. I'm glad the other didn't work out, even though it is a noninvasive way to repair the hole. Once we got there and found out all the other things that go along with it, I believe we are better off to go with the conventional method, because you only have to put the child through this once this way. I must say, with the reputation Boston has, we thought they were not kid friendly at all. They did very STUPID things like: giving Seth a blood test right BEFORE an echo! Then they were annoyed because he was upset and wouldn't lay still. They never even told us they didn't do the surgery for like 45 minutes after we were in the recovery room with Seth, and then it wasn't the doctor who told us (though he did walk past Seth's bed three times and never stopped to introduce himself or tell us anything). Gee, I'm sorry Janet, are you sorry you asked now? I do tend to rant and rave about medical things! Thanks for asking about my Seth, and for your prayers. Guest guest
Maureen, Thanks for the prayers and the (((((((((hugs)))))))). Seth is supposed to have surgery on the 10th. We shall see if his cold is better by then. Of course the doctor knows that Seth always gets an ear infection with a cold, so I won't be surprised if the surgery is postponed. We, of course, will make all the baby-sitting and kennel arrangements, bring our daughter in from out of town, and drive all the way there to have them tell us to come back next week and go through all this stuff again! Ahhhh, isn't life grand? LOL I don't think doctors have families or they would know how ridiculous they sound when they say " we'll just postpone for a week " ! Guest guest
nancy, peter and esther are the only two that dont have additional health concerns........??????are they just typical downs kids......just curious???????i praise you daily///////////
Guest guest
Leah, had a PDA, only 1 testicle, and is very small even for a Korean. And he is very high functioning. Except for deficites in spoken language no one would know he had DS. Esther has a PDA that will not be closed and we are watching her thyriod levels, and at 3y3m still isn't walking! Developementally they are both pretty typical DS as is Sam. Tim is our medical miracle. JJ has never had anything except ear tubes 1 time and an inadiquet tear duct. Personally I would rather have had the heart condition than the autism, but we discussed all that last week. and Essie are much easier that the other kids. Few ear infections and no green noses. I guess that could be called typical DS & Garry, parents of (9 ds), (8 ds/g-tube), JJ (6 ds/autism/celiac), (5 ds), and Esther (3 ds). All adopted. ---------- >From: okieleah@... >egroups >Subject: Re: Thanks for the help >Date: Wed, May 17, 2000, 6:47 PM > >nancy, peter and esther are the only two that dont have additional health >concerns........??????are they just typical downs kids......just >curious???????i praise you daily/////////// > >------------------------------------------------------------------------ >Best friends, most artistic, class clown Find 'em here: >1/4054/10/_/691668/_/958618081/ >------------------------------------------------------------------------ > >

Guest guest
Thanks so much for all the help and information. My doctor did suggest trying IV antibiotics if I don't improve soon but because my heart is so bad I'm afraid it might make it worse. So I'd like to try different oral antibiotics first. I guess it just takes a long time to get improvements. I'm glad to be a part of this group. Thanks again. Sandee
