Guest guest
Hi all, I have been lurking on this group for about 2 weeks. I have a dd who is almost 3 months old and started repositioning her. I have seen a change when I am vigilant, but with grandparents around the last month, they are always putting her on her back. We also had two long roadtrips- so time in the carseat definitely set her back- I noticed a huge difference in her head from before her roadtrip and after- scary! I noticed a flattening around 6 weeks and from then let her nap on her belly while supervised, but did not discontinue back sleeping. She was a great sleeper in the beginning (ha- that has changed now). Anyway, I was very concerned about 3 weeks ago. I live in the UK- and they do helmets here, but I will be in the states during her 5-6month (for 2 months). I realize that I won't be able to helmet her until she is 6.5-7 months. I frankly realize that is this is a strong possibility. DD was 1 month early and has a huge anterior fontanelle. Nurses and doctors are always commenting on this. Bc she was preemie and jaundiced she slept a lot more in the beginning on her back (though likes tummy time). So, please check out her photo album: AA:Baby K and tell me what you think. I want to hear the truth! I see plagio on the leftside- is that right? Or is it the rightside that is abnormal. I realize that she probably has brachy two. Do you think she seems severe that I should cancel my trip to the states? (I put this on the all about plagio group, too) (and someone thought her head was small- but it is measuring 75th percentile for her birth age.) Guest guest
I took a look. I honestly don't see too much. There may be a little extra width to indicate brachy, but the side view shows good curve at the back of the head. So maybe there was some brachy, but your repo is working well. Her head looks slightly flat on the top/right in the first photo (baby's left side). It might be worth getting her measured to see if there is really a problem, but I wouldn't cancel any trips. Just keep an eye on it and try to do the repo as much as possible. If she did need a band at 7 months you would still be able to get one, but from what I can see in the photos I don't expect her to. One thing you might try for repo is a bumbo chair. It holds the baby upright so the head doesn't have pressure on it. Your baby may be ready for it soon (not sure of the starting age, but you can use it before they sit on their own). It might be another option for the grandparents that keeps her off her head. -christine sydney, 4.5 yrs, starband grad > > Hi all, > > I have been lurking on this group for about 2 weeks. Guest guest
I took a look at the pics and she looks fine to me. At two months my son had much more flattening than your daughter. I bought a boppy nest pillow to use in his car seat and stroller at all times, I took him for physical therapy to stretch out his neck muscles (the doctor felt his neck was a little tight - the therapy lasted about 2 months), I aggressively repositioned him as much as I could, and gave him more tummy time (although he hates tummy time). At about six months his head shape had improved dramatically. However, there is still a slight flat spot. The Dr. suggested we see Cranial Tech here in Miami. We went and they suggested a helmet for him. But I have to be honest, I was not convinced. His head has improved so much and unless I point it out, most people don't even notice. So I got a second opinion from a Dr. Stelnicki who said that my son did not need a helmet and that his head would only keep improving now that he is so active. I really don't see much of any flattening with your daughter. I can understand how stressful it can be - I know I was stressed for many months about it. I was told that infants can be fitted for helmets up to a year old (even older in some cases). If I were you, (based on my own experience and from what I see in your daughter's pics), get the boppy nest pillow, have her doctor evaluate her for torticollis (sp?) and aggressively reposition her (switch sides when you feed her, switch sides on the changing table, use a blankie to prop her head to the opposite side when she sleeps etc.). At about 6 months, if you still feel like she needs a helmet than start consulting with the a specialist. Of course, speak to your doctor about any course of action you decide to take. On another note, my son HATES tummy time and will not fall asleep on his tummy. Even with this, his head shape has changed dramatically from when he was 2 months old. The fact that your daughter sleeps on her tummy is wonderful - chances are her head shape will only improve Good luck > > Hi all, > > I have been lurking on this group for about 2 weeks.
