Guest guest
After lo these many years of research and reading (5 to be exact), the information suggests that the c-toma itself is not congenital but the formation of the body parts which can lead to c-toma is. For example, I have had ear problems all my life because of poor eustachian tubes but no c-toma. My son, also with eustachian tube problems, developed c-toma. Re: New to this Thanks for all the replies! I didn't think anyone would read through the novella I came up with! The doc had Marine Corps training. Whether he was a doc in the Corps I have no idea, he just has a lot of certificates from the Corps on his wall. The tattoo ink is plausible in older inks but mine are newer (within the last 8 years) & most good artists will not use inks with metal bits in them. I had heard of this before I started getting tattoos. I know what kind of ink they are using on me before they do it. But thanks for the heads up on that! From what I've researched cholesteatomas can be congenital or aquired. Doc said that the size, the kind of issues I've had with the whole ear/nose/throat plumbing system since birth, the fact that my tonsils had to be taken out because they were blocking my eustachian tubes pretty much guarantees they are congential. And my mum had military overseas shots during her first month or so of being pregnant with me (she didn't know she was pregnant) & I think I read somewhere that one of those shots has been linked to poor developement of the areas I have problems with. (Although that could have just been us telling stories to one another. We like to make up cockamany reasons why things happen. It was probably us making things up so no one take my word on that.) After posting, I went to my insurance website & found listings for Otologists. I had no idea there were such things, just ENT docs. An ENT doc took out my tonsils so I thought they were supposed to do all the surgeries. I'm going to try one of them. Unfortunately the diagnosing ENT is also registered as an Otologist & in the same office. I hope he doesn't recognize me or the one I see refers me back to him. So I've got to call to make the appointment. Thanks for all the recommendations! Check out AOL.com today. Breaking news, video search, pictures, email and IM. All on demand. Always Free. Guest guest
Semantics & all, but if the body parts aren't working properly from birth because of poor development in the womb, it'd be a congenital problem, neh? My e-tubes were blocked by my tonsils for many years. I don't remember from itty childhood, but preteen years & such my tonsils were always the size of golf balls. Too bad when I got the tonsils taken out the e-tubes didn't suck the tumor down! What kind of issues do you have with your e-tubes? How about your son's e-tube problems? What has his experience been like having the c-toma? --------- Re: New to this Thanks for all the replies! I didn't think anyone would read through the novella I came up with! Guest guest
from what I have read and from what I have learned from our doctor, there are two types of Cholesteatomas. Congenital and acquired. Acquired means that there is usually some sort of dedeformity with your ear, tubes, inner ear, ect. Most of the time these can fully be taken out as they come out in one clump but they are prone to grow back because the deformity in the ear is not always able to be taken care of, hence the regrowth. Congenital means that there was something in the ear from before you were born (sort of like a grain of sand makes a pearl) that grows with you and you are able to discover when it becomes big enough to make trouble with hearing or cause other problems. These are harder to take out because they often peel like an onion and break away. This type usually only comes back if a grain of it is left in the ear and it regrows. I am by NO means an expert, but the explanation our doc gave us when we were first in there about a year ago for my son made sense to me... Guest guest
My issues have been a lifetime of ear infections, even occasionally at the age of 55, Eardrum bursting when flying, ear fullness and pain and countless visits to an ENT. My son has had 5 surgeries. First two to remove c-toma by ENT and rebuild eardrum. 2 more by Otologists to implant prosthesis and rebuild eardrum in Nashville. Last one by Otologist at U of Fl. to again rebuild eardrum and implant another prosthesis. He lost all hearing bones initially except stapes footplate. All the docs say the eardrum thing is poor e-tubes. He's now 20 and makes his own decisions about surgery. He's weary now (so am I) and says no more. He has no improvement in his hearing and at the last look there was a small pin size hole in the eardrum. He always asks the doc (since teaching hospitals tend to keep up with the latest developments) if there is anything new being developed for the e-tubes. Guest guest
Hi " new to this " , My son has just had surgery, so I haven't checked this site in a month+. It looks like many people have resonded, but I wanted to comment on the Q-tip question and itching. I was having EXTREME itching in my left ear, and with a son who's had 4 C'tomas, I was most concerned. I saw our ENT and he said I had an " addiction " to Q tips. The inside of my ear was so dry from using them that what felt like " water draining from my ear, " was actually my oil glands producing extra oil to moisturize the dry skin on my inner ear. He gave me some cortizone/antibiotic drops to use one week and said to STOP using Q-tips. He said it would itch like crazy until that dry skin healed, but would be much better in 1-2 weeks. It did itch like crazy and was better in about 1.5 weeks. With a c'toma, your itching may be coming from a totally different reason, but wanted to mention my situation. Although my son has C'toma, I have very few ear problems, only pressure when it's very hot and humid in Mississippi. I'd certainly consult with your physician, but Qtip use may be causing or at least contributing to the extreme itching. Best of Luck with your surgery. Oh yeah, after 6 surgeries, my son's scar is minimal.
Guest guest
, I had a biopsy last December, there was nothing to it. I don't know if all doctors put you to sleep for it, mine did. My side was soar for a couple days but thats all. > > well i am fairly new to all this and seem to be havein a hard time > dealing with it all.it is very overwelming........my biggest fear is > the whole biopsy thing.....and to make it worse i cant find a support > group in dallas that the pepole arent all poor me >
Guest guest
Hi ...just wanted to add my 2 cents worth....The biopsy was NO BIG DEAL. When I have to do it again, it won't bother me a bit. The only pain I felt is slight burning from the numbing agent which only lasts a few seconds. They did give me something that relaxed me a bit so I was just very mellow. The process took literally no time at all and I was in the recovery room for about an hour then home! No pain...no nothing. I hear that some people experience some pain in their shoulder but I was lucky enough not to suffer any pain at all. Now I've just finished my 7th week of treatment and no sides either!! I am really hoping this continues for next 41 wks! Anyway, best of luck to you and stop worrying so much and just focus on slaying that nasty dragon!!! The first one they went in twice and the 2nd time just once. I can understand worrying about the biopsy and what it is going to feel like but it really wasn't that painful. They do numb the skin before making a small cut to put the needle through and they use and ultrsound to check everything out before they do it. They may give you something by mouth to relax before they do it. and on my 2nd one they offered me something for pain after. You need to stay there a few hours to make sure there is no bleeding and they check you with another ultrasound before they release you. This is how they do it in Massachusetts. I think that I will be going in myself for another one after I see my new doctor. Keep the faith you will be fine and good luck. a

Guest guest
Hi again. As i stated before i am 38 yrs old. Mother of 3 children(ALL BOYS) and was first dignosed with pbc/aih about 10 yrs ago, but took the doctors another5 yrs before that to come up with a diagnosees.for the past 5 years i was on urso 250 and prednolsone. Two weeks ago i have started on URSO FORTE 500. It has helped some with inflammation. My numbers were 4 times the normal range. And i have many other things wrong, such as diabetes now, and hormone problems, sleeping problems, depression, anxiety,joint/muscle pain etc. The worst i think is always being in pain the area is always hurting, aches, get stabbing pains at times. And getting very tired within a short time but can't sleep. So does everyone feel like this? My oldest son michael just had blood work done at the end of august, and his levels were moderately elevated, so now the doc wants him to go to my liver specialist. I am hoping he won't have to deal with this, but from what i understand it can be inherited as an autoimmune problem, so now what? Now i am afraid for all my boys. I just feel like i am being punished. thanks Bishop
Guest guest
Gosh...I had no idea it was inherited. Yuck...however, since it is an autoimmune disease, I guess it could occur in other family members. Yet, this is a relatively rare disease, so I am thinking that the chances are pretty low of getting it I would think. Debby [ ] Re: new to this Hi again. As i stated before i am 38 yrs old. Guest guest
Hi Debby, My Father was dignosed with chirios of liver a year ago april, his is completely different than mine, but he retains water and has Asities, He had to be in the hospital for a couple weeks, and had 4 bags of blood transfused cause his count was so low, don't know where it all went. They had to tap his belly and took out 3/4 quarts of liquid. So i am guessing that the particular liver diseases may not be inherited, but with the actual functions of the immunity can be. My son will be turning 21 next month, and it is a bit scary since his father died when he was 21,(HE was then born 2 weeks later ) and around that age i was in the beginning stages of pbc/aih. So anyways i am in the process of getting him health issurance becasue ours just dropped him because of turning 21. So here we go on the merry go round..... Guest guest
, I am sure many people will be chiming in on this, but I just looked up Dr. Weil's material on VCO: http://health./ate/drweil/alldaily/2003/12/316479 I never thought highly of Dr. Weil anyway, but I must say that his writeup is very shallow and adds nothing new to the " all saturated fat is bad " mantra. If you read what he says you will see that he is saying plainly that he has no idea, and that therefore it is best for us to stay away from coconut oil. More to follow ... in the meanwhile, please read my post of two days ago about my cholesterol levels. Take care, Nina New to this Hi there! My name is . I am 32. I was just told about Virgin Coconut Oil this past week. It was suggested to lose weight. When I went to the health food store to buy it I was astonished at the calories and sat fat content. I gained about 70lbs when I was pregnant (had baby 2 years ago). I have about 20 more to lose. I have been really trying to eat right for the most part and exercise as much as I can (tho I do HATE it). But these last 20 lbs are impossible and ALL in my lower abs. Anyway...since getting home from the store I have been reading a lot on it and there is SOOOO much conflicting info. I read an article by Dr Weil which says NOT to take it. And another on WebMD that has bad opinions in there as well. I just dont know what to think. I would LOVE some advice from you experts Should I take this? Does it interact with medications? Have any side effects? How to take it? How much? Anything you can think to tell me would be SO appreciated!! Thanks in advance, -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Guest guest
Hi : I too was afraid to go ahead and use VCO in my diet being Diabetic. Any kind of fat would raise my blood sugar. So I wrote to Dr. Bruce Fife who wrote the cookbook I bought, called Coconut Lovers Cookbook where he mentions in the beginning about how it helps the Insulin to get inside the cells since we are all Insulin Resistant. Since I had a bad reaction to the Diabetes medication, which I had to stop taking, I certainly needed something to help control my blood sugar and boy does the VCO ever do a good job doing that. I also found out that he had a book called Eat Fat - Look Thin which I also bought. Just absolutely amazed at what this saturated fat can do for my health. Lowers blood sugar, raises body temperature for weak Thyroid people, tremendously helps digestion and absorption of nutrients which I had a problem with. The list goes on and also raises metabolism causing weight loss. Visit this site www.coconutresearchcenter.com and read their articles and see the available books and so on. Come on back with any questions . Bonnie New to this Hi there! My name is . I am 32. I was just told about Virgin Coconut Oil this past week. It was suggested to lose weight. Guest guest
, one further comment. I am in graduate school and I have been looking closely at the peer-reviewed research that goes into all of these filtered-down sources that we read on the internet and elsewhere. I can testify that these research studies do not ask the questions that we need answered. They use reductionist, biochemical assumptions and they lump foods together that should not be lumped together. For example, they test for " saturated fat " without distinguishing between the different kinds of saturated fats that appear in different kinds of foods. Or they will compare a " salad diet, " including lettuce and olive oil, with a " prudent diet " , including cooked vegetables, poultry, low-fat milk, fish, rice (without distinguishing between white rice and brown rice), without testing for a whole-foods, plant-based diet like the one eaten by most traditional cultures, with lots of grains, beans and vegetables and much less of the animal food. Or they will test for " carbohydrates " without distinguishing between simple and complex sugars or between refined and whole grains. Or they will study " whole grains " without distinguishing between brown rice, kasha, oatmeal (a flour product) or dry, old, stale, denatured breakfast cereal fortified with God knows what. Or they will make declarations about " coconut oil " while telling us that it makes no difference whether it is virgin or not, without telling us which one it is. In other words, they assume what they are trying to prove. You cannot test for the effects of virgin coconut oil by using chicken skin, lard, dairy fat or avocado, or hydrogenated coconut oil. You have to test the virgin coconut oil. And these questions - like the other questions I have enumerated above - have rarely been asked. For the most part, the studies just aren't out there. I do know this - that the diet I eat has simply not been tested, at least not in case-controlled or prospective studies. However, there is lots of epidemiology on it, and - like the epidemiology of virgin coconut oil - it is all good. That is the kind of study I rely on. I hope this helps. Nina New to this Hi there! Guest guest
This is a personal testimony from me. I have been using the virgin coconut oil to reduce weight. Taking it before meals breakfast, lunch and dinner. 2 tablespoonfuls that is and I lost 15 lbs in just 3 weeks. It may have worked for me and suggested it to my friends which they also thanked me for it because of positive results to them. regards. > > Hi there! My name is . I am 32. Guest guest
> Hi, , I started taking the coconut oil just over two weeks ago and had a lovely suprise when i stepped on the scales this morning. I've lost several pounds already and had 10lbs to lose that i haven't been able to shift over the last couple of years even eating really sensibly, with no junk food. I have a sluggish thyroid but taking my temperture this morning in was up to nearly normal. Don't be scared of it but i suggest start with a teaspoon 3 times a day with meals and build up to 3 1/2 tbsp and see how you tolerate it. It can give you the runs or affect you the other way to start with and has a detox affect on the body. I got a sore throat and cough that co-incided with taking it and felt fatigued to start with. Today my energy is up and apart from this break in my chores I'm whizzing around doing lots of housework and i'm buzzing. I suggest you read Bruce Fife's books that you can get on Amazon or various websites that promote vco, to learn all the marvellous benefits you can get from this oil. I was dubious at first, is this just another fad that will let me down in my search for more energy to do the things i want to do? I think this is for real even though part of me still can't believe it. Hope you get all the benefits you wish for yourself Sally ps the coconut milk(bought in 14oz cans from most supermarkets) is good as well. > Hi there! My name is . I am 32. Guest guest
Thank you so much for all of your responses!! I would love to hear anything you have to offer. My biggest 2 worries are: I cannot have ANYthing that is remotely stimulating (like caffeine, red bull, decongestants) due to a tachycardia problem for which I take a beta blocker and because I am prone to anxiety. So I need to make sure this will NOT create a stimulant effect. Also, I do NOT want to gain EXTRA weight!! Anyway, thanks and keep the responses coming if youd like – I want to hear it all!!! Rayne http://spaces.msn.com/members/CheersRayne/ Re: New to this > Hi, , I started taking the coconut oil just over two weeks ago and had a lovely suprise when i stepped on the scales this morning. I am 32. Guest guest
Osiyo ! Please be advised that the WebMD website is from medical doctors and huge pharmaceutical companies. Therefore they will try to put down the benefits of anything they cannot make huge profits on. IE: Colloidal Silver, DMSO, MSM, Micro Electricity, Coconut Oil, and many others. I have not been able to control my hypertension with herbal/natural remedies and went to a DO and found that he is just an MD too. Big on giving prescriptions and lacking on home remedies. So PLEASE do not listen to the down players but do listen to the actual experiences of people on this and other natural lists. Guest guest
This morning I put it on a Weight Watchers English muffin with some cinnamon. It was bearable. This was my first time :-) I bought it at a local health food store. Guest guest
, it may create a stimulant effect. Buy a small jar and try a tiny bit, and see how you respond to it. For your tachycardia and anxiety, I recommend a slow-paced yoga practice (not the power yogas). If you would like me to look at your diet privately, let me know. Some people do gain weight from VCO, but I think most don't. Either way, the only way to know what will be true for you is to try it. Guest guest
Nina, Thank you!! For the tachycardia I take a beta blocker which works fabulously – only it does make me tired. For the anxiety I do use some CBT techniques, plus I take klonopin daily. Ihave been feeling great in that reagard. I took one tbsp of the VCO this morning and feel fine. Would it be stimulating right away? I just hate the thought of that feeling!! I also take a B Complex, a multi, a calcium/magnesium/Vit D supplement, and fish oil. My email is cheers44@... if you want to contact me J Again, thank you!! Rayne http://spaces.msn.com/members/CheersRayne/ RE: Re: New to this > >Thank you so much for all of your responses!! Guest guest
Hi : I just read your e-mail and would like to know what CET Techniques are and how you use them for anxiety. Thank you, Andi RE: Re: New to this > >Thank you so much for all of your responses!! Guest guest
Was this the coconut-flavored VCO? I find it quite yummy and use it like butter. Smashed potatoes get really creamy and have such a nice flavor. anything hot, I put it in - try it in cocoa or hot chocolate, whatever you want to call it. Yeah it floats on the top a bit, but a quick stir, and it disappears. Carolsea > > > > > > Hi there! My name is . I am 32. I was just told about > > Virgin > > > Coconut Oil this past week.
