Hi, I'm sorry I probably won't be much help to you but am very interested in what other responses you get. I just started my 8-month-old with a Hanger band. Today is actually her first day, and I am already noticing that her left eye seems squished when she is wearing the helmet. My first thought was that the helmet might cause damage to the muscle over her eyebrow and/or push in her forehead/face in that spot. There does not seem to be excessive redness there when I take the helmet off, but I can see the mark where the helmet sits. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated here!

And good luck in getting yours worked out, as well!

Leah

Hi My daughter has a starband, she is plagio, has had the band for about 6 weeks and we are noticing that the side with the velcro which is her left side is starting to flatten her head and face on that side. When she first got the band, the left sideburn was much tighter than the right and we had it adjusted twice, but the ortho said it was okay because it wasn't leaving a red mark or anything on her face. We are debating just taking the band off and being done with it, because we don't want to risk her face being deformed for the sake of a round head in the back. Has anyone had this or have any advice? She is 8 months now. Thanks!

Leah: We are experiencing a squished eye also that began same day as the band

but it looks normal as soon as the band is removed. Is the affected eye near a

holding point? My daughters affected eye is the left eye but the holding point

is right forehead/left rear. I see no marks on her when removing the helmet even

though we have tightened the velcro up to 1/2 inch past where it should be. I

haven't asked CT yet because no one seems to understand my description of the

eye until they see her...Due to weather our two week was rescheduled to next

week so she'll have been in the helmet 3 weeks...

JuneBug: Have you tried taking your own photos to compare to when your child

first started the band? Is it possible that the area you see flattening was

originally a high spot that is now blending into the rest of the head shape?

I have heard of this problem with eyes, it is called angry eye. I have seen

posts on it on the babycenter.com plagiocephaly board. From what I have seen, it

is not supposed to squish the eye like that. I would take to your ortho and see

if you can get your band adjusted. I don't think it causes any permanent damage,

but you don't want to take a chance!

Hi there we also use Hangar our son started at 7 months and we are now 2 months in they are saying another 6 weeks or so until he outgrows helment and he will be finished. Seems that the difference between Hangar and DOC band as far as outgrowing helmet DOC goes to 2nd band and Hangar just comes to an end where they dont go to second band. Anyway I'll get to your question in a minute just want to let you know we were hesitant going w/ Hangar vs DOC from research but can say for certain we are very happy w/ Hangar and see significant improvement after 8 weeks hope the same happens for you. As far as those sidepanels go that come over the cheeks out son has some chubby cheeks and they really seemed to press on the them but they were able to make the adjustment by melting the plastic and bending them out a bit to where they didnt press as

much. There is plenty they can do I would be persistent w/ the adjustments of the helmet the orthotist is the key maybe use another one there in the Hangar outfit if there is one but those side flaps can be adusted. I would not be too worried about it though if it's not leaving red marks though it is supposed be be snug there to keep the helmet in place elsewhere it's not going to deform her face don't worry about that. If there is significant redening i would be concerned which is what our sone had. GL hang in there it's worth it!

My son wore a DOC band and had a squished eye at first. His eye was already

squished from plagio, but the band made it a little more pronounced at first. He

never had any red spots to indicate that his band didn't fit properly, and the

eye looked much better after just a week in the band. It was clearly better when

he finished treatment than before he got his band.

FYI - Many parents of children with plagio can't really see the child's eye

asymmetry until they look at their child in the mirror or sometimes in photos.

Try holding your baby up to the mirror without the band on see if you can notice

eye asymmetry. You might notice that the lid looks squished, the eye is a little

squinty, or the eyebrow on that side is lower.

Most likely, the eye asymmetry was already there, and the band is making it a

little more noticeable.

On the other hand, if the band is causing angry red marks that don't fade or

chaffing, you have a fit issue that needs to be addressed.
