Guest guest
If you think they're wrong about the nature of the sore, or it has progressed to an infection, pediatrician support would be useful. The pitfall of the hydrocortisone I've heard about is that it suppresses normal immune response. It's probably just the heat and humidity, though. Have you done all you can externally? A/C, reduce clothing? If it were me and Clara in this situation, I'd give the skin two full days to heal without a helmet or hydrocortisone, but maybe some other healing ointment. Then start a helmet break-in schedule (don't ask me, it's been too long) with hydrocortisone as needed, increasing to 23 hr/day wear with hydrocortisone as needed (and hopefully it won't be). Clara's skull was asymmetrical and pretty flexible, and you could see her head shape lose ground visually even during the daily off hour. That sort of instant " regression, " I wouldn't worry about. A lot of us must have it, and you don't hear us complaining of brain damage. But I wouldn't want to leave the band off for so many days that internal fluids and tissues shift all the way back to their naturally balanced configuration, because 1) you'll have to shift it back, maybe not so gradually as it was done through helmet adjustments; and 2) who knows what that does to the brain. Someone once posted a link to a letter in a medical journal outlining the outstanding anatomical questions about helmets in general, but I think this is the specific instance where concern is warranted: taking the helmet on and off for extended periods. My experience suggests that those changes start to happen on the second day, are largely complete in four days, and minimal changes continue to the tenth day.
