Guest guest
Hi, Can someone please help me to understand the Brachycephaly numbers a little better. My son was measured at 105.1. The therapist told me " normal " babies btwn 6-12 months have a measurement of 78 and recommended banding. In your experience what type of change can I expect to see and over what time frame? Is 105.1 considered mild/moderate/severe?? I will be sure to address this with the clinician I just like to have some background knowledge of real life experiences. Thanks!! Mom to Evan 7months- starting DOC Band soon...
Guest guest
Brachycephaly is measured by the Cephalic Ratio which is Cranial Breadth/Cranial Length. At 105.1% your child's head is wider than it is long. Most doctors recommend banding when it is over 90% ideal ratio - 78% normal - 73-83% moderate - 83.1% to 87.9% severe - 88% and higher Molly Novato, California Nicolas, 4, tort & plagio, STARband (CIRS Oakland) 4/24/06-9/12/06, Graduate! , 7 , 10 Please explain Brachy numbers??? Guest guest
A Cephalic Index of 105% is very severe. Right now, it's a race against the clock. Growth typically starts to slow down around 7.5 months old. If I were you I would make a request to have your son's band arrive in 1 week rather than 2 weeks. They should be able to do it for you if you ask the day of the DSI. The amount of correction depends upon growth so it's really hard to say. Also, if you decide to get him a 2nd band, that would allow for more correction. > > Hi, > Can someone please help me to understand the Brachycephaly numbers a little better. Guest guest
With that severe of a number, they will definately recomend more than one helmet. In fact, it's possible you could be looking at needing three helmets. The doc band is only good for 16 weeks or less if the babies outgrow it earlier. On the other hand, if you can only afford one helmet, will you be okay if his ending numbers are still quite high? Or, if the money is an issue, you could consider a Starband, which doesn't have a time limit on it. You could get more correction with only one band. For younger babies, the Starbands can be outgrown, but I'm guessing that you'd get at least twice as much time in one band. There are some people who prefer CT no matter what, but I just wanted to put the idea out there in case it was something you want to consider. Re: Please explain Brachy numbers???
