Guest guest
My son has what I believe is Brachycephaly with plagio. I took him to Gilette Childrens in St MN where they felt his head and said " oh he's a mild case and you can do what you want. Here's a brochure on our helmet " . Well that didn't sit well with me so I called back and complained. Turns out the person we saw was new to their facility and they wanted feedback on her. Well they got it! Anyway, I joined this group and was reading (a lot) and found that most of you at your initial appointments had at least measurments done if not scans to find out the severity of the condition. We never got measurments. I started to research a little more on the StarBand and found 1 place in MN that offers it. It's at Park tt in St. Loius Park. Just wondering if anyone has been there and what your experience was like and also what everyones thoughts are on the StarBand Helmet. I noticed that there are Active & Passive helmets. If I'm correct the StarBand is Active. The CranioCap we were offered at Gilette is Passive. In your opinion, which offers a faster/better result? Is it also true that Brachy is harder to correct if not impossible? My son is 8mo old. Thank you
Guest guest
Welcome to the group. Active bands generally offer faster/better correction. Some people do get good results with passive bands, but I would certainly at least visit the starband provider. My daughter had brachy and wore a starband. She had very slight asymmetry (plagio) so we didn't worry about correcting it. You can see her photos in the Photos area of this group under Our Plagio Babies S/ Sydney M. -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > My son has what I believe is Brachycephaly with plagio. Guest guest
, I live in the cities too. My son had plagio / brachy. As far as I know there are 3 band providers in the area : Gilette , Park tt and Fairview Orthotics and Prosthetics. The first helmet my son wore was form Fairview. I would not recommend them. They treated my son for about 6 months and the improvement was minimal. When my son was 10.5 months old we went to Chicago to Cranial Technologies and had 2 Doc Bands with them. I can recommend them . I always say that they saved my son's head and my sanity. After we were done at Fairview I also went to Gilette and Park tt for consultations. But at that point I decided I was going to fly to Cranial Technologies because they had/ have an amazing reputation treating head deformities. Gilette's helmet ( cap ) is a passive device. Your baby is 8 months now, so I would not even try it. It is not as affective as an active band. If you have an Rx for a helmet from your pedi, they will give you a free consultation at Park tt .Brachy might be harder to correct than classic plagio, but it is not impossible. I hope this helps you a little. Guest guest
Thank you ! I looked at Sydney's pics and they look almost identical to my son's head shape. Can I ask at what age did you start the band and how long did she wear it. Also what were her numbers? You had amazing results! I made an appointment today. We go in next Tuesday April 5th. Thank you > > > > My son has what I believe is Brachycephaly with plagio. Guest guest
Hi She wore it from age 5 mo to 10 mo. It is a long time and docbands seem to correct quicker (or at least they are in a second docband by that time). She made progress at every appointment, so we always knew we were going in the right direction. There is a photo of her scan with her other photos that shows her numbers and starting and ending shape. I think she went from 96% to 85%, and 4.5 mm to 3.5 mm. Some people have more rounding after the band is off, but it seems to me her head is more or less the same now as when she was a baby (only bigger with more hair). The band did make a huge difference, even if her head isn't perfect. -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > > > > > My son has what I believe is Brachycephaly with plagio.
