Sue,

I have heard various opinions on this topic. First, being that once liquor

is distilled it is GF. However, I am playing it safe. I contacted Bacardi

- thier rum is GF. I also know that Chopin Vodka (is GF; made from

potatoes) and Makawawa (spelling?; they have this at Trader Joes). Hope

that helps.

I think you are safe with any liquor other than cheap

brands, which means no happy hour deals. They can

have some grain alcohol in them with gluten. In the

past dark liquors like whisky and scotch were suspect

but if they are distilled they are considered safe.

Jack s for example is listed as safe in a UCSF

gluten diet guide I was given. There is also some

type of liquor that involves " wert " being added back

after distillation. I have no idea what this is or

what liquor it would be but those are supposedly not

gluten free. If anyone can answer that I have been

wondering for a long time. Well, enjoy the top shelf!

I can’t drink Wyder’s Cider –

they use barley malt for color I think. At any rate just one really gives me

gluten migraines.

gluten-free?

Hello,

I've been meaning to ask this question for awhile, but have

been getting by with wine and cider...

Can a celiac drink whiskey, vodka, rum, etc.?

Thanks,

Best,

Sue

As with any other product, the best way to know if something contains gluten is to call the manufacturer and ask (or to check on a reliable gluten-free product list). Some alcohols are made from unacceptable grains, other are not. You are generally safe with wine and most hard ciders. Other beverages would depend on how they are made. For instance, potato vodka is OK. Grain-based vodka is not.

Some say the toxic elements of wheat do not come through the distillation process; this has not been proven to my satisfaction (as I often say, there is much more we don't know about celiac disease than there is that we are sure of). My personal take on this is that any product produced from wheat, barley, rye, or oats is not acceptable for a gluten-free diet, distilled or not. Why take the chance?

At any rate, the things we know for sure you cannot have are beverages malted from wheat, barley, rye, or oats; this would include most beers and ale. If a beverage is malted and the label is unclear as to the grain used for malting, contact the manufacturer and ask.
