Guest guest
I think you should go with your own instinct, which is that the delays were already there before your son had the band. If Starbands were actually causing significant and consequential delays, due to their weight or anything else, I don't think they'd be approved for use. Now, that said, it's possible that the weight of the band is making it just a bit harder for your son to overcome some of his delays. But, so what! He's not going to wear it forever. My son (non-plagio one) was born 6.5 weeks early and had issues with muscle tone and neck strength, so he didn't hold his head up or sit up 'til quite late. But once he did he did, and now he's as strong as anyone. In my opinion, delays are only a problem if one builds on another and they never get resolved. My opinion: leave the band on until the plagio is resolved. > > Hi, > > My son is 9 1/2 months old and had an appointment with a neurologist today because he has develomental delays. He has torticollis and doesn't sit or roll over, etc. We have been working with a PT for three months and he is slowly making progress. He has been wearing his Starband for three months and his head looks great. I'm hoping the ears will line up a little better. > > The pediatric neurologist said he didn't have neurological or muscular problems. She said we should take it off. Am I crazy for thinking that is is a ridiculous? My son had delays well before we used the Starband. I am very concerned and I think we are going to get a second opinion. I'd appreciate any thoughts. Can anyone recomend another pediatric neurologist in the DC/VA/MD area? > > Thank you for reading this! > > Ramona >
Guest guest
Romona, Keep in mind that neurologists know a lot about their specialty - the brain and neurological system. They know less about gross motor development than a PT does. Your baby is in physical therapy and so if the physical therapist doesn't think that the band is hurting anything, I would go with that. My guess is that this doctor is just against bands to begin with. It's good that the neurologist thinks that there are no neurological problems so that probably means that you don't need to see another one. Yes, the helmet is on the head, which holds the brain, but other than that, it doesn't really involve anything to do with the neurological system. Now, nurosurgeons do get involved with plagio and bands, but that is only because one possible treatment method (and the old one) is to do surgery to correct it. I see the physical therapist as the expert to ask in this case. I'm not sure who you would go to if you wanted a medical opinion. Also, the neurologist may not be aware that a STARband only weighs 6 to 8 ounces. Most people think that the bands/helmets will be much heavier than this. I know that all of 's caregivers were really surprised to find out how light her STARband was. And, it sounds like you are nearing the end of the band wear anyway. So, a couple of more weeks shouldn't make a huge difference. But, if you are concerned, ask your physical therapist about it. If you stil want to see another pediatric neurologist and since I am in your general area (Baltimore), let me now and I'll ask around for you. I belong to my local mommy's network and because of 's food allergies, we belong to the special needs group. I can ask and may be able to get some names for you. Guest guest
Some of our son's docs (neurology, neurosurgeon and one physiatrist) were against it though others were neutral (other physiatrist, OT, PT and pediatrician). We made the decision to push for it as our son was 26mm 'off' which we felt was a lot and could be corrected. Our son had external hydro so we kept an eye on him to ensure he didn't show any signs of internal hydro while he was in the helmet. His difference was reduced to 7mm which would not have happened without the helmet as he has hypotonia and is very gross motor delayed. Our son is now 22 months and I have found to go with my gut instinct and fight for what I believe is right for him. Good luck! > > Hi, > > My son is 9 1/2 months old and had an appointment with a neurologist today because he has develomental delays.
