Guest guest
Hi my name is . My daugher has plagiocephaly. She is 6 months old. She has had a flat spot since she was 1 month old, her dr. hoped it would improve once she got older, but it's gotten worse. We had an apointment at Children's Hospital where they told us that she needs to have a helmet because her measurements are pretty significant. So, we have our first appointment at the place for the STARband tomorrow. So, my question is, what should I expect to happen at our first apointment? How long will it be until they have a helmet made for her? We were told average time the child has to wear it is 4-6 months, but that our daughter would be on the closer to 6 month range based on what they observed (her flat spot is on the side of her head). How long has everyone had to wear their helmet for? Can you really not get it wet? We have a trip planned to a water park in 2 months, if I can't get it wet can I take it off for more than just an hour a day? I know they say to wear it for 23 hours, but will it really make that much of a difference if it's more than an hour a day for a few days? Is it horrible at first for them to sleep in it? Or do they usually not mind? Thanks
Guest guest
Our daughter had a flat head at 2 months and we did the " wait and see " until 4 months. Unfortunately the ped didn't tell us all the things we could do to help it improve so it just got worse. My daughter wore a starband for severe brachy (flat in back) for 5 months, but that is longer than many babies. I would say average is close to 3 months. However it depends on the baby's growth, how severe the head is to begin with, and how good the ortho is. I don't think it is a problem to have the band off a few extra hours now and then. Put is on when you can, but don't spoil the family vacation. My daughter didn't do that well sleeping, but many babies adjust quickly or within 2 weeks. -christine sydney, 5 yrs, starband grad > > Hi my name is . My daugher has plagiocephaly.
