Guest guest
I know some people do cranial sacral therapy (CST) in addition to banding and think it helps. I don't see it as an alternative to banding, but it doesn't hurt from what I know. It seems a little " too good to be true " to me, but maybe it does help. -christine sydney, 3.5 yrs, starband grad > > Hello-my son has torticollis and plagiocephaly-he gets therapy for his torticollis weekly and is currently wearing a starband helmet (about two weeks now)-at our last pediatrician visit a lady (who works there) said she does cranial therapy (massaging bones in the head) and said she can fix our sons head so he wouldn't have to wear a helmet, she even said she could fix the torticollis-all this seems to good to be true....any thoughts, suggestions, advice??? Guest guest
We did CST with my son when he was about 3-6 weeks old to help with breastfeeding issues - which as it turns out, were related to torticollis. I think it helped, although it didn't solve the torticollis. He went from only turning his head midline to right (never to the left) to turing his head both ways (though not equally). She was the first one to gently mention that he had some asymmetries in his head and face, although at the time it was pretty mild. If we had realized his torticollis might lead to plagiocephaly, we would have continued with the CST and/or done chiropractic as well... but our first pediatrician didn't flag it, and we didn't know (the new pediatrician is much more on the ball). I think it's worth trying CST and/or chiropractic, aggressive repositioning, neck stretches and/or PT, etc. for a little while and see if it helps. That said, I would only want someone to try CST on my child (or me, for that matter!) if they at least have some kind of medically-related training - PT, OT, chiro, etc. Good luck. -- > > > > > > > Hello-my son has torticollis and plagiocephaly-he gets therapy for his > > torticollis weekly and is currently wearing a starband helmet (about two > > weeks now)-at our last pediatrician visit a lady (who works there) said she > > does cranial therapy (massaging bones in the head) and said she can fix our > > sons head so he wouldn't have to wear a helmet, she even said she could fix > > the torticollis-all this seems to good to be true....any > > thoughts, suggestions, advice??? Guest guest
I'd never heard of CST before our (wonderful!) doula/lactation consultant recommended it because of some of my son's breastfeeding issues. I'm very glad we gave it a shot early on (from about weeks 3-6) for the breastfeeding issues, and may very well do it again for his plagio. If you and your son area also having issues with breastfeeding, that's a great additional reason to try CST with a good, experienced practitioner. > > > > > > > > Kelley, > > > > > > > > Cranial therapy is also called cranial sacral therapy. It's an alternative treatment, but I know a couple of people through another online group (dedicated to milk protein allergy issues)Â who got full correction with it. One of them went to get CST for the digestive issues and the side effect was that it fully corrected her son's flat spot. It was mentioned by them only in response to my off topic post when I finally found out that my daughter's head would not round out on it's own. One of the ladies is an alternative health practioner of some sort and is really into alternative treatments because that's all that has worked for her 4 kids with multiple digestive issues. I don't have any information about the severity of his head - I only know that his first treatment was at 14 months and it rounded out on its own in the next few months. I don't remember the details of the other baby. > > > > > > > > Also, my cranial doctor told me that there is research that shows that it is effective to treat plagio and brachy. What she said was that sometimes the bones in the head get stuck and this prevents them from rounding out even after the baby is not longer on the head. I believe that this is why 's head didn't improve and even got worse after she was sitting up, crawling, and even walking. That is the reason that I went ahead with it. However, because my daughter was already over a year old, I didn't have enough faith to put all of my eggs in that basket. Now that she is too old for a helmet, all of my hope is with CST and chiro. And, I do believe that the CST and chiro together have produced improvement in her head since her helmet graduation. And, I'm not the only one to see it. Others are seeing it too. > > > > > > > > That said, if you already have a helmet, I wouldn't get rid of it. You've already paid for it and helmet therapy is a more commonly accepted treatment for plagio. However, it couldn't hurt and it might even help if you wouldn't to supplement with the cranial therapy. > > > > > > > > , mom to , 26 months > > > > STARband grad May 2009 at 20.5 months > > > > CST and Chiro > > > > land > > > > > > > > > > Ticker id: IvP3Â Â Ticker id: yZZPÂ Â Â Â Ticker id: lFno > > > > > > > > cranial therapy??? > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > Hello-my son has torticollis and plagiocephaly-he gets therapy for his torticollis weekly and is currently wearing a starband helmet (about two weeks now)-at our last pediatrician visit a lady (who works there) said she does cranial therapy (massaging bones in the head) and said she can fix our sons head so he wouldn't have to wear a helmet, she even said she could fix the torticollis-all this seems to good to be true....any thoughts, suggestions, advice??? Guest guest
We started CST about 3 weeks ago for our daughter who has torticollis and the kind of head-flattening where her head is narrow behind her ears...she has/had asymetry with her ears, eyes(one smaller), and cheek as well as with her tort her whole body curved in a " C " shape. Even with the PT she was up and down...some days better than others. While my daughter was having her 1st CST session I watched her eye open up, so that by the end of the session her eyes were almost symetrical! Also her tort was so much better that she was able to fully turn her head to each side...I started crying...she was 3 1/2 months old and hadn't been able to do that, yet! Her nursing was better, she slept better and her digestion was better! Oh yea, my husband (who was skeptical)noticed when I got home that her head was widening in her narrow spots. All this after one treatment! She goes today for her third treatment and might not need anymore! She is a different child all together! Even family and friends have noticed. I can't say enough about this treatment. You can check out this website to find a therapist: www.upledger.com Our therapist is a PT and we are assuming the insurance will partially cover it. If anyone is interested she is in Santa Cruz, CA and I can give out her info.
