I'm not sure if there is a connection between jaw/mouth issues and torticollis but because of my baby I've wondered the same thing. His tort was discovered by our lactation consultant because he had (and still has to some degree) a crooked jaw. When I googled crooked jaw, I found links to tort. Hi folks,

I wanted to ask if anyone had ever heard of torticollis having any root causes with mouth/jaw structure problems (not the neck).

In addition to her torticollis, I just wonder if any of my daughter's issues below are linked to mouth/jaw structure: unsuccessful latch, doesn't open her mouth in an open "O" shape when feeding solids.

The thought occurred to me today when thinking about my 3 year old nephew who has mouth structure problems that affect his speech. Could it be possible that my sister and I both possess some weird genetic trait that screws up our kids' mouth structures? A big assumption, but just curious if anyone had ever heard of any research linking torticollis (or these other issues) with mouth structure problems.

I emailed our pediatrician, cranio-plastics specialist, physical therapist, and lactation consultant, but my guess is that none of them will have anything useful to propose. If there is a link, or even potential link, I'd like to find as many preventive measures as possible to avoid further developmental delays.

Thanks,

the main muscle effected by torticollis is the sternoclydomastoidious muscle (i'm sure i'm spelling that wrong lol). it goes from the sternum (breastbone) to the clavical (collar bone) to the jaw. it would absolutely make sense that it could cause latch problems.

we've had some really rough nursing problems with my son as well. it's frusterating as i can't seem to get any help with it.

aja

I don't think tort causes it unless it's a severe case that is left untreated (see study: http://www.plagiocephaly.info/resources/pdf/Yu_etal2004.pdf ).  It's more likely that restrictions in the uterus caused both conditions simultaneously.
