She is very cute! Honestly, she looks moderate for brachy. Definitely one of

the less severe cases I have seen. That being said, I still see brachy

characteristics such as forehead bossing, bulges over her ears, some extra

width, and some occipital flattening. I believe she would correct very nicely

with a band. She probably wouldn't need to wear it very long either. She just

needs to gain some length, occipital rounding, and have her width held while she

grows. I would band, even though she's not severe due to the fact that she will

probably look totally normal, as long as the type of band used is an active band

and the ortho is experienced.

measurement, which I know is marginal for abnormal. But, her cephalic index

(ratio) was 93.4%, which makes her severely brachy. I guess It's so hard to

decide whether or not to helmet because she 'looks' fairly 'normal' for such a

severe brachy number.

She is so very cute! I looked at the pictures and I will be honest, her head

looks great! My daughter had severe brachy, her CI was 98% so I know all about

analyzing heads and when I see your daughters head it looks pretty normal to me.

In these pictures I have a hard time seeing the brachy. With that said, I feel

that you should base your decision on how you feel . . . listen to your gut and

do what you are most comfortable doing.

As for my daughter, she's in a STARband, she is now 9.5 months old and her CI is

91%. We've made some really good progress and when I look at her now, her head

looks great! Our orthotist indicated to me that a CI of 88-91 is what they now

consider " normal " . He advised me that long ago the ratios were lower but they

are finding that they weren't exactly true so trying to get to the low 80's

really isn't necessary.

I can send you before and after pics if you'd like to see them. I hope this

helps you make your decision.

I haven't been on this group for a long time... ;) but if you are on the fence,

AND the insurance is covering it, AND you have a good support system (caregivers

who won't secretly take the helmet off) I say do it. There is no harm and it can

only lead to a better head shape. We banded and while my son's head looks very

" nornal " now I still see some asymmetry and wish I had gone longer than 6 weeks

with the band. I had my parents watching him and I found out they either could

not put the band back on or felt like it was squishing him and left it off for

long periods of time...

My two cents.
