We had a CT for my 3 mo old. I did not want him to have anesthesia. We called the radiology department at the hospital where it was being done and talked to a tech. He informed us that they always try to get the scan without anesthesia first. Because we called him and told him we did not want our son to have anesthesia he moved our CT up 4 days. Once we were in the room it only took about 15 minutes to get the scan done.

We had also started calling other hospitals to ask if they normally used anesthesia on infants. All 3 hospitals we called said they rarely do.

I don't know if you'll have the same result as us, but it might be worth making some phone calls!

Also - while you're there make sure to ask how to get a copy of the radiologist's report and a CD with the images on it (they shouldn't charge extra for this). You'll probably have to go back in a couple days to pick those up, but they're good to have with you in case you have an appointment with a doc who hasn't seen them.Good luck!

Our doctor, Dr. Pomerantz at the UCSF craniofacial anomolies center, is concerned that our 5 month old son's skull plates might be fused (plagiosynostosis). We are scheduled to have a CT scan next friday. He will have to be under anesthesia so he doesn't move. They said the scan will last about an hour. Needless to say we are nervous about all of this. It's difficult to wait over a week to find out.I'm wondering....Has anyone else gone through this procedure with anesthesia? Is anyone familiar with Dr. Pomerantz or the UCSF craniofacial anomolies center?Has anyone had to have surgery to correct the fused plates? Thanks, virginia

My son had a CT scan at 6 months and they did not put him under. They never

even mentioned it to us they said we might have to reschedule for another day

and make sure he didn't have a nap because they wanted him to be napping. The

doctor ordered the CT scan to make sure there was no fluid on the brain, and to

make sure his skull plates were not fused.

When we got our results back 48 hours later the results were:

the ventricles are normal in size, no evidence of midline shift, intracranial

hemorrhage, abnormal mass, or abnormal fluid collection. We also found out that

my son has extra bones in the back of his head, and is common in children and

they are not recommended to be removed or there would be a hole in the back of

his skull. So with that said everything seems to be fine and we were referred to

Hanger to see about measurements and if we needed the helmet. Needless to say we

have been in the helmet for 6 wks. Everything is going good, and we have seen a

major change. Good luck to you.
