Guest guest
we were told he was likely to need 2 bands because of the severity of his plagio, but right at the end of his first band he made sudden huge improvements. they did not recommend a second band. aja On Sun, Feb 28, 2010 at 10:58 PM, carrie_fl4 <carrie_fl4@...> wrote: I have a question I am curious about to those of you who have been through at least one DOC band at CT.When you went for the initial evaluation, were any of you told that your child might need more than one band? I'm curious to see if everyone is told at the beginning that they expect it to take a certain number of months and if they ever say the child might need more than one band at the get go? I read about so many where your child has two or three bands as well as the couple of families I have been in contact with. We were told our daughter will probably be in her band for 3 months. At the end of 3 months are they going to recommend another one? thanks!
Guest guest
, We did 2 DOC Bands, but expected early on to do one. We started at 5 1/2 months with 17mm CVA, 10mm mid-face, 8mm skull-base asymmetry. We asked at appointment #2, I think, about the possibility of needing a second band and were told not to expect to have to do a second one. (At the time, I didn't even realize people did more than 1 band until I started seeing it here, so I asked CT about it at the second appointment.) In band #1, we saw LOTS of improvement in the first 2 weeks - so much that our tech predicted that he might be done with the band altogether in a matter of 4-5 weeks, if I remember correctly. I assumed that meant that he'd get all the correction he needed in that time - but I know now that could have also meant that he'd outgrow it in that amount of time. My son outgrew the band after 7 weeks and several good growth spurts. He graduated with 9-10mm CVA, 3mm mid-face, 4mm skull-base asymmetry. I think it was about 2 weeks prior to graduation that they mentioned that we start thinking about whether or not we wanted to continue on with a second band. We were thrilled with the progress he'd made and really didn't want to do another one...so we decided to stop at one. Also, insurance wasn't covering the cost and we really didn't like the thought of a second band paying out of pocket. We never felt pressured by CT to keep going and they told us that - given where we were (9-10mm CVA) - about half stop and half keep going. We loved our tech and when she knew we were finished, she made us feel very good about the progress Cade had made and how far he'd come. And he had come a long way. However, for the 7 weeks following graduation, I couldn't shake the feeling that maybe we stopped too soon. By this point, I was critiquing all the heads around me and I felt that if I didn't know my son, I'd look at his head and think that he needed a helmet. And I didn't like the idea that he still looked like he needed a helmet after having been in one. So - we went back to CT and did Band #2. He graduated with 5mm CVA, 0mm mid-face and 0mm skull-base asymmetry. We are very glad we did band #2, especially since we got to 0mm in facial and ear correction. It seems like it would be hard to predict the need for a second band, as there's no way to predict how much growth will be achieved while in the band, where that growth will go and how the parents will feel about the end result. Guest guest
We were told that our son would be able to wear the band for about 3 month. They said they expected to see him improve to about 8 mm assymetry (from 15, 15 and 17) They did not say that would be borderline banding, I knew that so worried a 2nd band would be needed but they never mentioned a 2nd. However in the end his measurements were 4,5 and 6 mm assymetry so a 2nd band was not recommended though I thought he could have used another and probably would have been an easy sale. We did not push for it though (my husbands choice) and within 6-12 month I stopped obsessing a out what wa left and barely notice ever now (2 yrs post band).
