New Here with an Older baby

Hello everyone -

We're new to the list. My son currently has his StarBand ordered and will

hopefully get it next week. He was diagnosed with plagiocephaly and tort at 3

months of age and we did physical therapy for a long time. Through physical and

positional therapy, we saw a 5 mm change with his plagio and got rid of the tort

entirely, but he's still at a 9 mm difference and therapy won't help us any

more. Does anyone have any positive stories to share about the helmets helping

older babies (he'll be over 10 months before he starts) and also about tips on

sending in an appeal to our insurance?

Thanks!

Welcome to the group! My son started treatment at 9 months and 11mm (calipers)

or 12mm (scan) asymmetry. He wore his DOC band for a little over 3 months and

exited at 4mm. He had torticollis that was never severe, but is still an ongoing

issue at 17 months old. It's great that you started PT early and got the

torticollis under control. This will positively impact how much improvement you

get with banding. Everyone is different, and the amount of correction depends on

how much your baby's head grows and how consistent you are with using the band

23 hours a day. However, I'm sure you'll see some good correction even starting

at 10 months.

BTW, don't stress if your baby is upset by the band the first few days. Most get

used to it quickly and do just fine, and some - like my son - never get upset

about it at all. Do expect him to sweat a lot, especially the first few days

until his body adjusts. Just wipe the sweat out with a dry towel every few

hours, and dress him lightly. And, be good about cleaning the band with rubbing

alcohol and shampooing his hair. Make sure his hair and the band are dry before

putting it back on. Good luck!

Welcome to the group. My daughter finished her band at 10 months, but I went for

a follow up at 14 months and her head had still grown quite a bit. A lot of

parents start around 12 months, I wouldn't consider your baby older. I think

you'll see good progress. 9 mm isn't that much, and you're lucky you've already

gotten a lot of correction.
