NEWLY CROWNED MISS SANTA CRUZ PROMOTING CELIAC AWARENESS....Ruth , the new Miss Santa Cruz County, has announced celiac disease awareness as her platform (cause she supports). Ruth's interest in celiac disease began with her celiac grandmother. She attended the Stanford Conference to learn more about celiac disease and treated the audience to a sample of her fabulous voice with two songs. The Miss Santa Cruz County Scholarship Program awarded Ruth a $5,000 scholarship for her education at San State University. We look forward to hearing more from Ruth this year as she pursues her quest to promote awareness of celiac disease. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- HALF MOON BAY DINNER....NOVEMBER 9 Contact: Martha Deutsch, deutschm@... The sixth annual Stanford Celiac Conference was a huge success with more than 400 attendees enjoying a day of gluten free meals, wonderful baked goods, excellent speakers, an array of vendors. The kids' program was especially fun with a mad scientist theme and educational games. Thanks to the more than 60 vendors* who participated by providing samples for goodies bags, products for the raffle baskets or to serve with breakfast and break, or having a table display and handing out samples. Thanks also to all the great volunteers who made this day possible. We look forward to the next conference in Fall 2006! *Alti Plano Gold…Amy's Kitchen…Annie's Homegrown… ARICO Natural Foods Co....Authentic Foods…Barbara's Bakery... Sharon Park is wondering if someone might have a heavy duty stand mixer that she could use to make gluten free bagels. She promises to give bagels in return. (Even more if you help her make them. ) She lives in the inner Richmond district of SF, and can travel if needed. She is hoping that her bagel making skills could evolve into a business of gluten free baking...but first needs to collaborate with other hungry celiacs. Contact Sharon at 415-379-3734 or hosnar@.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------- GLUTEN FREE ARTICLE IN GOURMET MAGAZINE Gourmet is running an article about gluten free baking in their November issue, offering recipes developed by lise , one of the Food Philosopher sisters. (www.foodphilosopher.com.) Included are chocolate chip cookies, lemon cake and a New York style Pizza crust. This is exciting news that our diet is featured in a prestigious food magazine and that Gourmet editors recommend these gluten free baked goods to everyone! Other recipes can be found on lise's website as well as a description of her cookbook that will be published by Surrey Books in March 2006: Classic Gluten-Free Baking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- LOCAL STORES OFFER MORE GLUTEN FREE PRODUCTS As more celiacs are diagnosed, stores are adding more gluten free products. Whole Foods markets in the Bay area are now offering bakery products from their own dedicated gluten free bakery in North Carolina, a project of WF baker Lee Tobin, a diagnosed celiac since 1996. Working in a Chapel Hill WF store, he began baking for himself and other celiacs in the area, getting rave reviews that spread to other states. The need for a larger operation became obvious. The products are packaged and frozen within hours of baking. Most stores will defrost and display them in the fresh baked goods area. Because they are new here, you may need to ask about them at the counter. They include several varieties of yeast and quick breads in loaves, muffins, scones, pies, cakes and cookies. Other stores reported to be offering more variety in gluten free products: Integrity Foods, 1777 S. Bascom Avenue, , CA 95008, across the street from Whole Foods in a small shopping center, contact owner Breidenthal, 408-371-0100. I personally do not know which products are there now, but Kinnikinnick is one brand offered. welcomes your inquiries and requests. Castus Low Carb Superstores, 18080 San Ramon Valley Blvd, #104, San Ramon, in Chevy's Mall, contact the owner Carpenter 925-244-1000, sfg@.... They are currently branching out to include gluten free foods and looking for advice. If you know of other stores to mention, please let me know. There is so much more available on the internet, that often our store selections seem very limited. But we can all help each other by making requests and encouraging them to order a greater variety of gluten free products. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- STAY UPDATED ON CELIAC DISEASE… A web site recommended for all celiacs, old and new, is ’ Celiac Disease Gluten Free Diet Support Center at http://celiac.com/index.html A comprehensive and valuable resource. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- ACCESS TO ARTICLES ON CELIAC DISEASE (Thanks to Earl Goetz) At the Stanford Celiac Conference on October 8, Dr Gray referred to several published articles about the disease. These are available on PubMed, a web site of the National Library of Medicine at NIH in land, in abstract, or as the full article for those with subscriptions to the various journals. To read the abstracts go to: www.pubmed.gov. In the search field for pubmed enter: celiac gray. Find the first 7 articles authored in part by Dr. Gray. Full text is free for some articles. Dr Gray also referenced 2 studies about sourdough bread. For these in PubMed enter: celiac sourdough. Each of these are available free in full text as well as the abstract. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Note: This list is confidential and will be used only to keep you informed of local celiac activities and important celiac concerns. To subscribe, report address changes, or request to be removed, please contact Martha Deutsch, 650-726-9562, deutschm@...
