Guest guest
I just wanted to know what people think of this letter from Garden of Life. Their Primal Defense product and FYI (For Your Inflammation) have wheat and barley grass juice. I'm not sure I believe that these products are safe for celiacs. Anyone else know for sure? Thanks, Alice " Dear Alice, Thank you for contacting Garden of Life. Safety is our primary concern. We grow our raw materials using strict guidelines to maintain consistency and ensure our end products do not contain allergens; however, it would be extremely difficult for any company that uses grasses in their product to provide a 100% guarantee. We cut the grasses when they are young before the gluten head forms; we don't include gluten in our products, however we can't guarantee that our products are gluten-free. There may be trace amounts due to the large number of suppliers we handle. For those that are extremely sensitive to allergens such as gluten, they need to be cautious with any product they consume. I hope this information is of help to you. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Have a blessed day. Guest guest
I've read a number of posting from people who seem to get symptoms when they use these. Many call them " die-off " symptoms but they are the same ones that I get when I know what the cross contamination was (looking back). I won't consume anything that was anywhere near gluten, never mind actually has the plant (whatever parts) in it. I just don't know how one really knows that the leaf never has any protein that the seed has in it - I don't understand how that would work. Guest guest
When I started seeing a nutritionist last year, she told me that wheat and barley grass, if from a reputable supplier, should be gluten free. I always try to use organic supplements so I won't react to the pesticides and herbicides and did not react to " Amazing Grass " wheat grass (which I found at Whole Foods) and I am super sensitive! Guest guest
Remembering that 70% of the people with CD don’t have noticeable gut reactions to full on gluten products, I still don’t understand how the parent plant (wheatgrass) could be completely free of a protein that is found in the seed. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Nor does it make sense that I would want to use this plant when there are other, unrelated plants (like algae or kelp) that may well have the same positive effect. Eating grass is usually something that only starving people do, it is not a traditional food item in any country – even where people eat pretty much anything and even where people eat insects. I completely avoid wheat grass as a conservative measure. Since it offers me nothing I believe that I require, I feel no sense of loss either.Like you, I find it incredible that anyone would choose to eat or drink anything that comes from a plant they know can harm them unless careful scientific studies have demonstrated it's safety. I'm choosing caution in this case.Steve--http://SensibleCeliac.com/
Guest guest
I don't quite understand why a company representative would WANT someone with CD to use wheatgrass, assuming his or her thorough commitment to the customer's best interest.
