In San Francisco, I've had good luck with Meze, which is a high-end Greek restaurant on Chestnut Street at Divisadero. It isn't a GF restaurant, so there's always the chance of contamination. However, I've never had any problem, and the headwaiter takes my requirements seriously. The food is great. They encourage tables to eat family style, which I find pleasant -- my husband orders GF so we can share.

The only problem I've ever had at Meze is that a server often brings a complimentary dish of olives with a slice of bread before the headwaiter arrives. The headwaiter removes the dish and brings a FRESH bread-free bowl of olives, without any complaint.

Actually, I rarely have any trouble getting a serious, non-chain restaurant to comply with CD needs. Franchises, places with set procedures, are another matter.

Don't have SF tips, but if you come to the Monterey Peninsula, The

Passionfish Restaurant is ex cellent and the chef's wife has many food

allergies so he is very knowlegable and willing to make subsititutions.

Their dishes are so good --fish and duck are particular favorites of

ours --and many of the sauces are GF as is the flourless chocolate

torte. The wines are a bargain and a very nice selection--it's in

Pacific Grove.

We'll be sure to try Alma's when we are next in the city.

Maggiano's Little Italy in the Santana Row shopping complex on Winchester Blvd. in San specializes in GF meals. We went last night for my 15-year-old's birthday dinner; a chef came out to talk with us, and he spent the next 20 minutes preparing four GF dinners: salads, salmon, roast chicken, and pasta, with fruit for dessert. Highly recommended. Reservations required (tell the reservations person you need to eat GF). Good luck!

P.S. Worst experience: counting on P.F. Chang's for safe meals. Molly and two of her teen celiac friends got SO sick from eating the take-out we took home from dinner one night. We figured the bus person used a wheat soy-saucy spoon to dish up the leftovers.

I have a list of restaurants with some GF menus also listed, or websites

where you can get the GF menu, at http://celiacsupport.stanford.edu. I'm

glad to update the list if you want to send your tips to me at

Hi,

I'm a recently diagnosed celiac and I am obsessed with figuring out where I can get great food without feeling like a freak. I had a fabulous gluten-free dinner last weekend at Alma's on Valencia Street in SF. It was a great restaurant before my diagnosis and now doubly good since they knew all their ingredients and offered me lots of GF choices. Chevy's near the Metreon was another story altogether. (I left in tears.)

Does anyone want to share the name of a favorite place to eat out in the Bay Area? Any worst experiences to share?

I'm so glad I found this group!
