Guest guest
, I'm new to the list, and saw in older posts that you've cooked a lot of GF Japanese food. My husband was recently diagnosed with CD, so we're vetting everything in the kitchen (incl. a fair amount of Japanese stuff as we also lived in Japan for years). Would you happen to know if any of the following Japanese products are GF? If not, I'll track them down. Making my own dashi stock is yummy, but it would be nice to be able to use the jumbo container of hondashi soup base I've already got... Ajinomoto / hondashi soup base (bonito flavor, chuka flavor) Ajishima / soup base (mushroom flavor) Kagome / tonkatsu sauce Kinjirushi / neriume with shiso Mascot brand ground spices (nutmeg, herb saute mix, mustard, ginger, cloves, pasta basilico mix) Nisshin Foods / green tea ice powder ( " matcha ice no moto " ) Otafuku / yakisoba sauce, okonomi sauce Otsuka / Energen energy drink powder Q.P. / Kewpie mayonnaise S & B brand spices (ichimi, shichimi, red pepper, allspice) Takaokaya / okazu nori (ajitsuki) Yamaki / katsuobushi ( " katsuo pakku " ) Youki / gara soup (chuuka ryouri you) Know of any GF ponzu sauces, tonkatsu sauces, or okonomiyaki sauces (or recipes for homemade versions close to the real thing)? Coincidentally, I went looking for the little plastic fish that hold soy sauce the day before reading your post about them, and found that many Japanese markets are out. Did find a good selection at Kamei (525-547 Clement in SF), and Ichibankan in Japantown (22 Peace Plaza #540 for SF location; also branches in San Mateo and El Cerrito) expects a shipment in shortly. Soko Hardware (SF Japantown) is rumored to stock them, but they happened to be closed when I was out looking. Also went looking for modern bento boxes to pack nice GF lunches in, and found a good selection at Irving Housewares (2200 Irving in SF -- better selection & prices on the boxes themselves than Kamei). Nice ones with multiple built-in dividers to keep food separate, clear lids, variety of sizes, etc. Both Kamei and Irving Housewares had the little aluminum foil cups to separate food in bento boxes, Kamei had the fake plastic grass ( " baran " ) to separate dishes, and Irving Housewares had coated paper cups so you could microwave the bento. I'm finding all this stuff convenient for packing all kinds of food in the bento boxes for lunch, not just Japanese food. Best, Deb
