Hi there,

I'm looking for recommendations for good Indian restaurants in the Oak/Berk area

and

San Francisco that are good at accommodating gluten free eaters.

Please send your picks!!!

thanks,

Ajanta on Solano Avenue is not only super accomodating to gluten-free

eaters (and actually knows everything that's in their food!) but is

also amazingly delicious. Most of the dishes are gluten-free other than

the breads, and if you're not too sensitive you can try the veggie

pakoras (the batter is made of chickpea flour). They may be fried in

the same oil as gluten-containing things but I've never gotten sick

from them and I get sick pretty easily. Otherwise stick to their tasty

curries and meats. They are my favorite Indian place in the East Bay.

They seemed more knowledgeable and polite about my gluten issues than

other places and like they're used to serving people with food

restrictions.

You can also try Pasand on Shattuck, they make dosas (crepes) that are

gluten-free and filled with tasty stuff. The guy I ordered from there

knew which items had wheat flour in them and which didn't. Double check

to make sure you're ordering one that's made of lentil and rice flour

only. It's not my favorite Indian restaurant but when I'm in downtown

Berkeley it seems to be one of the only good options other than Baja

Fresh.

I've heard good things about the new-ish restaurant Dosa on Valencia in

SF if you're looking for something a little more upscale. People I know

(maybe even on this lsit?) have raved about it - It specializes in

dosai which are traditionally GF. I can't wait to check it out.
