Guest guest
At Whole Foods deli, be careful about the possibility that non-GF could have dropped into a bowl or soup urn. At my Whole Foods, the GF hot foods are placed at the back, so the possibility of cross-contamination is lessened. In the deli section where a cook dishes up the food, I avoid bowls that are adjacent to non-GF drippy items. Most of the older cooks are extremely helpful. The younger ones sometimes just don't know. Safest, of course, are the pre-assembled packages. The WF dolmas, in packages or not, are a favorite. What part of San Francisco will you be in? I have pretty good luck in most restaurants. Asian places are the most difficult for me, except for ones I go back to repeatedly, where I have found an owner I can explain CD to. H. H. They have a pretty good deli, and they clearly mark allergies on the labels (at least at the Whole Foods in San Mateo). Also, they have a pretty good selection of gluten free snacks. My restaurant knowledge is a bit more limited, since I'm somewhat newly diagnosed myself (6 months), so I'll let other people chime in about that. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. My name is Becky and I've been gluten free for just over a year now. My boyfriend and I are taking our first big trip since my diagnosis next month and have decided to go to San Francisco. I have finally gotten use to shopping and eating out here in the Metro Detroit area and am a bit nervous about eating out when we're out west. Are there any suggestions of where to go or to shop when I need a quick bite to eat? We're only out there for a few days and a couple of those days we're planning on going to Napa Valley. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Becky Harper Woods, MI
Guest guest
Hi Becky, My husband and I just had a wonderful meal in SF and it was the first time I'd gone to a restaurant since being diagnosed and was very nervous. In my opinion, people in SF are very accomodating and all along the Piers there are wonderful seafood restaurants, where there are many gf options. We chose one of these, and enjoyed fish and salad and wine with a jazz band playing. Very nice! Guest guest
so here's a list of my usual spots for the best cheap gf food in the neighborhoods where I find myself most often- Lower Haight- Burger Joint (great fries, free range beef & chicken) at Haight and Pierce, and up the street a bit if you hang a right on Divisadero there are a few nicer r estaurants where you can get stuff probably. One is Herbivore. Mission- new taqueria on 16th just past S.Van Ness across the street from gas station. place is awesome, just a little more $ than most taquerias but worth it. another Burger Joint on Valencia around 19th. Bissab Baobab is a great restaurant for dinner and pretty reasonably priced. It's Senegalese food on Mission street somewhere between 21st and 23rd. Downtown/SOMA- Rocco's on Folsom (2 blocks south of Market) between 6th and 7th. It's an upcale diner/sports bar kinda place but the food is awesome. it is a bit limited for gf (I always get the grilled chicken side and a side of polenta). if you eat chicken it is damn good really. Polk Gulch- there's a good affordable sushi place on Polk between California and Sacramento called Nara sushi. Also if your ready to spend some $ there's Crustacean right there too. You can't miss the big neon crab. It is worth going there just for dessert actually. They make a flourless chococate cake that is absolutely divine (should have mentioned it on here before). I had no idea you can something with a cake texture with just chocolate and eggs. BTW this also is one my fav neighborhoods... the upper crust Russian hill part and the seedy Tenderloin side too. Hemlock is a really cool bar on Polk between Post and Geary. If you guys go up this way the Geary bus from Market or Union Square is pretty quick or the 47 up Van Ness. Just a heads up cuz the bus that goes up Polk street sucks. Have fun. SF is great!
