Guest guest
I see one in SAC that I may try when I am up there, but family is also allergic to soy and nuts so may be a risky place anyway. Speaking of that …..I really miss Asian (chinese, japanese, thai food). I rarely eat it anymore due to scare of allergies. Does any one have a asian like dish or sauce that you can recommend (sweet-sour, chili, curry) that I can make without soy, nuts, fish sauce or dairy and that is not too spicy for the kids? I know it is a tall order but it would be nice to add a new recipe to our boring meals. Pei Wei is an operation run by PF Changs. Whether you are a regular diner at PF Changs (I'm not.), Pei Wei's is considerably different. This one was noisy, fun, fast moving, and filled with families for Saturday lunch. The Pei Wei website offers four entrees suitable for Celiacs. I selected one that required no modification - order straight off of the menu. The other three require omitting vegetables, crunchy things, or sauces. There was pleanty of good tasting food in the form of a nice, interesting salad with an ample amount of large chicken pieces, crunchy rice noodles, and a vinagarette with bits of hot pepper (one click above mild). Then top this off with a Southern California favorite - Golden Spoon frozen yogurt. You have to go to another shopping center for that. We can only hope that Pei Wei moves north! Guest guest
We eat asian food almost every day. My wife is Taiwanese and all of us have an interesting array of food allergies and intolerances - she can't eat shellfish and certain fruits, my son is allergic to nuts, and I of course get the celiac award. So, one thing I can heartily recommend as an alternative to the ubiquitous soy sauce dilemma is black bean sauce. This is found in asian grocery stores around the Bay Area such as Ranch 99 and Lion Market, and I have photos of a couple of bottles here: http://flickr.com/photos/sanbeiji/476789274/I use both of these brands all the time and they are excellent. I believe that both are actually soy free as well as gluten free, but double check the ingredients.
