Just something to be cautious about. I went to dinner at Maggianos in

Santana Row a few days ago and was really excited that the chef came

out to talk to me about my gluten-free diet and how they have a

dedicated food preparation area for gluten-free food. When my food

came out, I checked with the runner that it was the gluten-free corn

pasta (never had it before, so didn't know what it looked like). He

assured me it was. However, at the end of our meal, the waiter came

out and told me that their had been a mix up in the kitchen and I had

just eaten the whole wheat pasta! I've learned a very valuable lesson

and can't stress enough that if the chef comes out to talk to you when

you order your meal, you should insist on that chef bringing your meal

out for you. The manager was very good about taking responsibility

and telling me any medical costs would be covered, but it was

definitely an avoidable mistake.

Hi Krishna,

Sorry you had to go through that! Did you feel sick afterwards?

I have been to that Maggianos about 5 times and I only have really enjoyed it and felt safe there once out of those 5 times. Even that time, they came out after I took a couple of bites of salad and said that the dressing wasn't gluten free. The other times I felt that the people that brought the food weren't sure that it was gluten free, or if it was gluten free, but I really didn't think it tasted all that great for the price that it was! I think they are just so busy that it's hard for them to do it right. Maybe one of us celiacs needs to go in there and re-educate them. We have so few choices the way it is!

At least they owned up to it and took responsibility. It’s

especially frustrating all around when a restaurant tries to cater to celiacs and

things like this happen. We love the consideration but when things go

wrong it’s our health that suffers. I think that is why so few

restaurants do. Wish I knew what the answer was so we could eat out more

easily.

Hope you don’t suffer hugely. Try taking bromine (an

enzyme made from pineapple, I think) to help sooth your digestion.

Thanks for the feedback Pam and Amy. I've definitely been feeling the

effects of whole wheat pasta this week. I'll have to keep bromine in

mind in case this happens again.
