I've always had good luck with Meza on Chestnut in the Marina. It's Greek, dinners only, Tu-Su. Others speak well of Aix in the Marina -- on , I think.

In my experience with my 16 year old celiac daughter (diagnosed @ age 12), the more upscale the restaurant, the more likely the chef will be able to accomodate you with the physical separation of your food prep from others.

Choose places that offer more 'California cuisine.' No italian. It's a no-win situation. No chinese either. They just aren't set up for GF cooking, unless you go to PF Changs.

That said, Rubicon, Hawthorne Lane, Aqua, Farralon...places like these. No question that they are expensive; but you will ultimately be much safer.

Good Luck!Get a sneak peak of the all-new AOL.com.

Dosa on Valencia Street has GF South Indian food if you pick & choose, and Zadin on 18th near Castro has GF Vietnamese food (in Zadin's case marked on the menu + GF beer).Sharonbritney <bellabrit7@...> wrote: hello all...I am a recent diagnosed celiac sufferer and I will be going out to dinner with friends on sunday night in the city. Most good restaurants will accommodate you. Look at the menu and

identify a few things that look likely (minimal sauces or complexity),

get to the manager (not the waiter) and ask him/her if any of the

things you have identified can be made without flour or bread, ask if

any of the sauces are pre-made and if so to check for no wheat, and

make sure that your salad comes with no croutons. Buca di Bepo has some

GF suggestions, but you don't need to go to a chain restaurant.

I would feel far, far less confident in a chain restaurant than in an established non-chain restaurant known for its good food and attentive service.

I used to work at Ghirardelli Square, and I ate there often quite inexpensively. It depends on what you choose. Even when I was with a client, I didn't want a big meal before returning to my desk. I ordered soup, salad, that sort of thing. Back then, at least, the upper, more informal area offered a limited, inexpensive menu. If you're looking for the view, it isn't quite as good in the upper level, but the tables there are shady and quieter than downstairs in the "white table cloth" area.

Incidentally, people not living in the city may want to know that it's pronounced with a hard "g" -- Gear-ah-dell-ey. The "r" in the middle is nearly silent.

They were able to make grilled fish and saffron rice

for my daughter, as well as an amazing GF chocolate

Its not inexpensive ($26.00 for a fish entree), but we

really felt very well taken care of.

There is this great restaurant in North Beach San Francisco called Nua. It's

located at Grant

and Green. They are not dedicatated gluten free, but the waiter was very

knowledgable about

Celiac. He said that his girlfriend has it so he knows what can and can't be

eaten and was

very helpful and willing to make substitutions. The food is great! Everything

is carefuly

made and fresh.

It is a very nice restaurant, a bit on the pricier side. But it would be

perfect for a special

evening or just anytime that you want really good, well-made food. Check out

their website

Out The Door (The Slanted Door's less upscale restaurant on the lowest level of the Westfield Shopping Center on @ Market) is AMAZING. It's modern Vietnamese fusion type cuisine, and they can make almost anything on the menu GF... they even have GF soy sauce to make your dishes with, if you ask them to. They are knowledgeable about GF issues and it was so cool to be able to order anything I wanted. I highly recommend them. Also, another recommendation for Dosa on Valencia.

I have to second and third this recommendation. I've always felt

that the waitstaff and kitchen staff have my welbeing in mind when

they serve me. Everything I have eaten there has been fantastic, and

the waitstaff knowlegable and accomodating.

After dinner, go have a hot fudge sundae at GHIRARDELLI CHOCOLATE

FACTORY. Their hot fudge sauce is GF, and they serve Dreyer's ice

cream (most flavours are GF). They keep a book of ingredients at the

front counter, so you can double check.
