I want me a diner

Hello all,

Yesterday morning (ok, early afternoon) DH and I suddenly had a

strong craving for a greasy spoon/health oriented diner. (the latter

meaning they offer tofu or tempeh options, and represents my hopes

rather than his, lol). We loved several in Boulder, Colorado but

haven't quite found one that suited us here yet. We ended up on

California Avenue near Stanford at Café Brioche.

(The above is not my review, just a little more information about the

place.) I'm always a little stressed about new places, but I had the

home fries and an omelet with portabello mushrooms, shallots, and goat

cheese with a sour cream caper sauce. [if you go you might want to

interrogate the waiter about prep methods for the home fries- they

were a bit vague, but he insisted there was no gluten and I didn't

react, so...] I very much enjoyed my breakfast and my $1.75 cappucino

(cheap, yes?!!) and am excited to go back and try their tofu options.

This time I went with egg because I was unsure about the " herbed " part

of the tofu and only wanted to risk one new thing (the home fries) at

a time. It was very nice and I enjoyed the meal out a lot- but was

wondering...

Any other great diner places out there, especially in the Mountain

View/Sunnyvale/San area? We went to one sort of so-so place in

Mt. View previously- they close at 2 which is usually a bit early for

us and didn't have any tofu etc. options, so it wasn't that

interesting to me. I'm still looking for home fries/ hash browns to

die for... The new potato/red potato home fries on Cal Ave are ok but

don't make my pulse beat any faster.

If there are fabulous safe places in SF I would be happy to hear about

them too, but unless we're going already, we probably won't drive

there and try to park first thing in the morning like we would for a

more local place. TIA!
