Guest guest
I just received my copy of " The Essential Gluten-Free Restaurant Guide " yesterday. I have been navigating through my 2 month diagnosis now and found this book to be somewhat helpful. However in Santa Cruz there are only 2 listings. Cafe La Vie on Front st downtown. It says that they do not have a gluten free menu but there are many options and to consult the server on the ingredients. The other listing is for Clouds Downtown on Church st. They point out in the book that the kitchen can handle gluten free requests but that there is no gf menu. Although I do not live in Santa Cruz, I work there about 5-10 days out of the month. I would recommend the Trader Joes downtown as her biggest resource. They are expected to get a Whole Foods in '08 and that will be extremely helpful. What I do for lunch is go to Jamba Juice. Not all the drinks are gluten free but you can read the ingredients of the individual drinks to find one that is. They also wash, rinse, and sanitize to ensure no cross contamination. I have also found that the Nob Hill in ville on main st. (15 minutes away)has the largest GF section that I have seen. They blow TJ and WF away with their selection. Another tidbit would be to make sure and read the labels on beverages. I was continuing to drink Diet Coke until I read that it had Caramel Color but Diet Red Bull is okay if she needs it for studying. Take care and good luck. Guest guest
Argh!! This is my problem, being so new at this. " Don't eat wheat " is easy for me, because it's on the label clearly. It's all the other stuff, like this, that throws me. Can someone fwd me that link again (that I think was sent, unless I dreamt it!) of where to check to see if an ingredient is gf? I had no idea about caramel color, but since I'm not a coffee drinker, soda is how I keep going through the day. Haven't been able to figure out why I've been sick, but I had a soda (regular Coke or Dr. Pepper) every day I was sick. So caramel color has gluten? I was continuing to drink Diet Coke until I read that it > had Caramel Color
Guest guest
Caramel color *can* contain gluten, but most mainstream colas are gluten-free.Coke says: " We are able to confirm that Coca-Cola classic, caffeine free Coca-Cola classic, Coca-Cola C2, Diet Coke, Diet Coke with Lemon, Diet Coke with Lime, caffeine free Diet Coke, Sprite, Sprite ReMix Berryclear, Diet Sprite Zero, vanilla Coke, diet vanilla Coke, cherry Coke, Fresca, and our 100% juice products (without added ingredients) are gluten free. " Pepsi is also gluten-free (their coloring is derived from corn sugar, last I checked)., good chance you're sick from all that awful high-fructose corn syrup, the high level of caffeine, and/or aspartame. There's so many things in a cola that could make one sick, I think gluten is probably the least of our concerns ;-P Isaiah (who misses Coke a lot but can't risk the terrible anxiety she gets from the caffeine/sugar combo) -- Gluten-Free Bayhttp://glutenfreebay.blogspot.com
Guest guest
I work in Santa Cruz and live close by. I go to La Vie every now and again. It used to be just a raw foods restaurant, but they’ve now incorporated some fish and hot dishes. I’ve never gotten sick. The food is ok (the old menu was better) it is pricey though. I’ve eaten at Clouds once, didn’t get sick. There’s a New Leaf in downtown SC (and on the West Side) – New Leaf has some great options. There’s also a little kiosk out front (Alfresco) that has GF, DF options (salads, rice bowls, rice paper wraps) The women is very knowledgable there. Hula’s Island Grill downtown has options…ive eaten there a few times and haven’t gotten sick (I’m am VERY sensitive (and have additional intolerances) and do not like to go out to eat for that reason, so I’d say these places are pretty safe. One of the servers cannot eat gluten, so the cooks understand. As for the pizza and pasta, therent aren’t any restaurants that serve it, but New Leaf, Staff of Life and Nob Hill (in Capitola, only 5 minutes away) carry Amy’s Rice crust pizza and different pasta options (but as far as im concerned, it’s Tinkyada or nothing) – Staff of Life carries a few crust options and also Glutano rice crust pizza. I really don’t brave too many other places, rather cook at home, but if I think of anything else, I’ll reply again. - From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of tshanrock Sent: Saturday, September 08, 2007 11:02 PM Subject: [ ] Re: GF Dining in Santa Cruz I just received my copy of " The Essential Gluten-Free Restaurant Guide " yesterday.
