Maya,

You can get a really good GF pizza at

lunch time at Mariposa Café.  Or take one home to bake.  The facility is

entirely GF and always has been.

hello all,

i went out to pizza rustica on college ave in oakland tonight for the first time. i was so

excited because i have heard about their gluten free pizza option for ages but

never got around to going there. i had a pizza which was pretty good, but when

i got back home i started to feel really sick and bloated. needless to say, i'm

not super pleased that my $20 10 inch pizza made me feel sick. has anyone else

had a similar experience there? i am thinking about calling the manager

tomorrow.

We just ate there on Sat and had no

problem. We do dairy free pizza, so maybe some CC with the cheeses they put on

?

Hi Maya,

I accidentally deleted the pizza place that someone emailed to you that they said was DEFINITELY gluten free. Could you please send me the name? Thank you. Sorry you had such a bad experience at pizza rustica- I will cross them off my list...

Hey everyone,

I've heard that if you call Pizza Rustica ahead of

time and let them know you're coming, they'll make

extra effort to clean the areas ahead of time and be

extra careful to try to avoid cross contamination.

(I'd guess that this would be easier for them during

non-busy nights - like not trying Sat night for your

first time.)

But of course, since the facility isn't fully GF, CC

is gonna be a concern in a pizza joint with flour

flying.

Please, they're really nice there! When you call to

complain, can you do it nicely? For those of us who

are not as sensitive to CC but still stay GF, we don't

want places scared away from even offering a GF

option. (Like Pasta Pomodoro stopped even carrying

rice pasta, and it's disappointing to me to not be

able to eat there any more.)

Anything we can do to keep GF options out there, even

if they're not perfect on the CC issue, would be

appreciated!

Smiles,

Rahel

Hi--

I want to chime in with Rahel's comment. Let's encourage and educate rather

than discourage and complain. I too hope for more options rather than wanting

to scare away those who try to accomodate our needs.

Hello all,I sort of feel like I need to defend my original email. I am actually not usually sensitive to cross-contamination at all. In fact, since being diagnosed 7 years ago this is the most sick I have ever gotten from eating in a restaurant. After the meal I had at Pizza Rustica (on a sunday, which is not a busy restaurant night-there were only two other tables other than ours that were full) I had to stay home from work for two days because I was so sick. I actually never ended up calling the restaurant at all because I was so ill. Also, I did call them in advance before eating there to inquire about their gluten free options. I am very pro more restaurants providing gluten free food. But if these items, which are often more expensive and take longer to prepare, aren't reliably gluten free, then I don't personally feel like they should be advertised as such. Thanks to Patti for calling to talk to the owner, and I hope that those of you who do

choose to go to this restaurant call in advance and ask to talk to a manager to ensure that your meal is prepared safely. Unfortunately, it's clear that based on my experience as well as others on this list, the food is not consistently gluten free, and I wish I would have known this before eating there. -Maya "Palmer, " <palmer@...> wrote: Hi--I want to chime in with Rahel's comment. I think part of it is also the fact that they don't check all their

toppings to see if they are GF. There are things on the menu like

sausage that stick out as things to probably stay away from. I get the

Provencal, which is my favorite, and have eaten there many times, dine

in and take out, and its awesome.

I love Mariposa too, but their hours limit me as I work in SF. *sniff*

Hi there, I have eaten there three times. It was a while ago, but I don't think I feel like I had Celiac symptoms after eating the food. But I was very unimpressed by how the gluten-free angle was handled. We had the first meeting of the Celiac Dinner Group there. I called way ahead of time with a date that we would be coming, and I emphasized who we were and that we would need the gf crusts on hand and clean plans, etc. I made a reservation. I called again before the dinner to give them another heads up. But when we got there they didn't have the reservation and acted as if they had never heard anything about it. Luckily, they had just barely enough crusts to feed the group. They just seemed disorganized. Also, once I ordered a pizza to my house, which isn't far from the restaurant. It didn't come until at least 2 hours later. So if someone is hyper sensitive to gluten exposure, or just

doesn't want to deal with shoddy service, I would recommend they skip the place. p.s. The pizza that is served at lunchtime at Cafe Mariposa in Oakland is a better bet, both in terms of service and gluten exposure. You can also buy a premade pizza. You might have to call ahead of time. L²
