Guest guest
Last week people were discussing what to do if one discovered they'd accidentally eaten gluten. In a Clan.com newsletter, a reader asks Dr. Fine if anything can be done to help him recover more quickly from accidental gluten ingestion. Dr. Fine suggests that a probiotic might help him become less sensitive to accidental ingestion. My interpretation of this is that the probiotic is to be taken long-term, not just when gluten is eaten. He says that after one eats gluten, there's little that will help the inflammatory reaction. I've paraphrased carefully, because clanthompson.com prohibits excerpts being used without permission. Guest guest
Yes, there has been quite a bit of research going on in Europe about the use of probiotics in celiacs. I read the research a while ago, and it was indicating that celiacs who have a good gut flora (from use of probiotics) may be able to tolerate gluten with no ill effects. I know this is a gross over simplication - but basically the flora will assist in breaking down the gluten so that there isn't a reaction. You can also be tested to see what gut flora you have low levels of, and thus tailor the program of probiotics to your particular needs - but I guess many people have had that done as part of their work up??? Anyhow - search the internet - but remember its coeliac (spelling) and probiotics in Europe!
