Guest guest
Hi Sam, Welcome to the Bay Area. Hopefully, you have had a chance to look at the newly update CaliacSF.org site [formerly bayareaceliacs.org]. We are trying to be both an " umbrella " communications group for the Bay Area/Northern California and a group that meets together approximately monthly. In direct answer to your question about Una Mas: No. I figure that a restaurant has to win me over by providing useful information, and if they can't, then it is not my restaurant. Rather, I prefer the ingredient disclosures from people like Chipotle Grill, Panera Bread, Askew Grill, 's and others. You can still be social and bring your own bag lunch. Maybe others have good experiences. There are not a whole lot of fast food restaurants on my list of safe places to go. A good source, although no Northern California, is to do a search on " Celiac San Diego. " Gluten Free in SD is CeliacSF.Org's mirror organization in the south state. Guest guest
Hi Sam (do you prefer Sam to ?), Welcome to the bay area and our group. We used to eat at Una Mas all the time (before they closed their Capitola location). We didn’t have any problems as long as we stuck to the obvious GF items (corn tortillas; nothing battered or fried, including the chips). If you can request a soft taco on a corn tortilla you should be OK. I would recommend calling the Una Mas location they will be ordering from and asking a few more questions specific to what you would like to have, for instance if you want the carne asada, do they flour the meat before frying it? Also ask about any sauces that may be on the meat or taco. I don’t recall any such problems at the Capitola location, but you should check the particular restaurant they will be ordering from. If a phone call doesn’t work, you could take a field trip and check it out in person (off hours is a good idea; questions are more likely to get answered if they aren’t swamped); Una Mas is basically a fast food Mexican, so it would be easy to drop in for a quick bite or just to ask questions. They make a point of serving fresh ingredients, so they usually can tell you what’s in their food without much trouble. If all else fails, bring a GF bar or other snack as a back-up. If you are doing your residency at Stanford, you should check out some of the celiac resources there, the Celiac Sprue Research Foundation and the Celiac Clinic, as well as the group that meets occasionally in the area. When you get settled in, be sure to send us an introduction with your celiac history and any other info about yourself you would like to share. Thank you for allowing me to join. I already have a question for you. During my orientation next week, the faculty will be providing lunch for us residents. They're ordering from Una Mas restaurant, which I understand has several locations throughout the area. Have any of you eaten succesfully at this restaurant? What do you order? I can't seem to get anyone from their corporation to answer any questions. Any help you guys can give would be MUCH appreciated. Hope to meet some of you soon. Thanks, Sam
