Guest guest
Hi fellow San Franciscan celiacs-- Have any of you gone to SF's Camp Mather? I'm planning to go with my 3 gluten free daughters (and my celiac self) this summer and would love to hear from others who have managed a gluten free diet there. The camp director seems helpful and said we could have refrigerator and freezer space, but it would be great to hear if/how others have done it, and if anyone has advice. She said the salad bar is gluten free, which sounds promising. I must admit the thought of dealing with improvising gluten free meals for a week in a cafeteria is a bit overwhelming. There will be a few things she can have from regular meals - be sure to talk to Mike Cahune, who is the head cook, and there are a few other cooks she can also ask. I can't eat cheese and a few other things because of migraine triggers, so I have to ask ahead of time about meals myself. The meals tend to go in a pretty set order every year - and you can ask for your plate to have only what you want out of what's there. The only nights she won't get anything from the hot meal line will be lasagna night and pasta night - but there will probably still be a hot veggie she can eat. Saturday - herb chicken day - ask if the marinade has glutenSunday - lunch on the lake, hot dogs and hamburgers. Could probably do a hamburger in lettuce leaves, ask if there is any kind of bread fillerThursdays are always Thanksgiving supper, but they will totally make a plate with just turkey and veggieFriday is tri tip night - ask to leave off the Bearnaise sauce, which is definitely flour thickened. And I think Monday or Sunday is BBQ Salmon night - just make sure seasoned with a glutenous soy sauce. The kitchen will totally work with you as far as warning you - they do use a lot of Sysco food service products so some reconnaissance is in order, but you can ask to see the ingredients. Try to track kitchen staff down in the AM when they are not so busy. There is always a salad bar with lots of fixings, and some of the cold cereals will be gluten free, I am sure - just ask. Hope this helps.Jette" J.
