I hope the information helps. Have a great trip, and don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. I have a list of restaurants where I eat. Here it is. I just read a recommendation from who returned to the east coast after her stay here. She ate successfully at Bubba Gump (Kailua-Kona) , Donatoni's, and Kamuela Provision Company. The last two are part of the Waikoloa Hilton. She said Donatoni's has gluten free pasta (call ahead to make sure they're not out of it), and the K. Provision Co. is a steakhouse. Kathy Restaurants Kailua-Kona Ba'le (Vietnamese) in the Kona Coast ShoppingCenter---lemon grass chicken salad--non-spicy, summer roll (not the veggie--I didn't eat the sauce, even tho they said it fit the criteria I had given them--might be ok) Pancho and Lefty's--shredded beef tacos, carne asada, house margarita Big Island Grill--specials usually include fish--order it broiled (they use flour in sautéed dishes, although will leave off the flour if you ask--I think broiled is safer)--roast beef and roast pork (specify " no gravy " )---garlic mashed potatoes (specify " no gravy " ). They have a couple of gf desserts. I've had their crème brulee (not always on the menu--it's sometimes listed with their specials) and know other celiacs who have enjoyed their flourless chocolate cake. Outback Steakhouse--ask for their gf menu (also available to you at their website) Ocean Seafood and Royal Jade Garden both have dishes I have eaten--I pick a chicken/vegetable dish and say " I need white sauce--no flour and no shoyu (soy sauce), or oyster sauce, but cornstarch, salt and sugar are okay " . I tried that with beef broccoli once--they made it my way, but it wasn't very tasty--so I stick to chicken. I just found a new favorite: shrimp with cashews. 's-Kailua-Kona L and L Drivein aka Hawaiian Barbecue is in the Lanihau Center and Keauhou Shopping Center. I order Kalua Pork with rice and tossed salad as an option (instead of macaroni salad). I tried their garlic ahi……..I believe it was gluten free, but I didn't like it. …salty and covered with garlic. Also in Keauhou Center, there is Habanero's. I've eated nachos, soft tacos (including beef, pork and chicken) there. Honalo Teshima's restaurant---They are accustomed to serving me " Upcountry Chopped Steak " or " Chopped Chicken " ---tell them " no oyster sauce " --using my shoyu (San J Tamari which I provide). I eat their rice, cucumber salad (namasu)….but do not drink their tea--it appears to have barley in it. You would have to take in your own San J tamari or whatever you prefer, for them to use in the preparation. Kainaliu/Kealakekua Keei Café at Hokukano--Open for lunch and dinner--closed Monday. I have eaten the pork chop entrée, with pineapple salsa and also the steak cooked in red wine sauce. Delicious and gluten free. I've also eaten the flan they serve for dessert. Guest guest
Hi Jackie, I can't vouch for all of the information I'm about to paste into this e-mail, but it was my " cheat sheet " for a visit to the Big Island about 3 years ago. I gathered the info from various gluten free travel websites. If you end up near Hilo, Abundant Life Natural Foods was terrific. They made me a safe GF sandwich. I do recall that we ate out at probably the only restuarant in Volcano (next to the gift store/gas station) and it was NOT celiac friendly at all. It is a super small town, so perhaps best to cook at home on that part of the trip. Good luck and have fun... - Assortment of random Big Island GF Info from the Web: Abundant Life Natural Foods & Cafe Natural Foods Store and Cafe (Listing #4755 , since Jan 2003 ) Address: 292 Kamehameha Ave Map Hilo, Hawaii Phone: 808-935-7411 WebSite: http://www.abundantlifenaturalfoods.com Kona Natural Foods Crossroads Shopping Center 75-1027 Henry ST #105 Kailua-Kona, HI 96740 808-329-2296 (This is up the hill from the King Kamehameha Hotel) 8:30 – 9 every day ; close at 7 on Sunday. Kea'au natural foods (next door to Ace hardware) Kea'au Town Shopping Center 16-586 Old Volcano Road Suite 109 Kea'au, HI 96749 808-966-8877 1. There are a couple of restuarants in Kona, on Alii Drive, that I like. One is Thai, and the other is Indonesian. I don't remember their names, but just walk down the street and you'll find them. All the restuarants along the South Kohala coast are in resorts. They tend to be expensive but accomodating. Hawaiian food is pretty good, GF-wise, except for one thing: soy sauce. All soy sauce used in Hawaii is Kikkoman, which is wheat-laden. So always ask about soy sauce. Plate lunches (with " two scoops rice " ) would be ideal for celiacs if it weren't for the soy sauce! 2. My brother lives in Hawi on the Kohala coast and I checked out a tiny health food store there. They had Pamela's cookies, some GF pastas and some GF cereals but not much else. If you are staying in the resorts the chefs should be pretty accomodating since they are generally well-trained. Fish in Hawaii is delicious and many recipes will not use breading. Also there are great fresh fruits to be savored which can be most cheaply obtained thru farmer's markets (there are a few up the hill in Waimea) Also, if you do go up to Waimea I recommend a little lunch place called " The Little Juice Shack " (in the Ranch shopping center) which has fresh squeezed juices, soups (made there so you can ask about ingredients) and lunch meats and cheeses for bring-your-own bread sandwiches. 3. We travelled to the big island last February. Merrimans, 30 min. from Kona, restaurant was fabulous, just call ahead and speak to the chef. Also, we stayed at the Orchid at Mauna Lani, and they were incredible. Again, call ahead and talk to the executive chef. 4. We have been having great success with the Roy's chain of fine restaurants on the other islands. They keep our stuff on file, so we get a custom menu when we show up. There is a Roy's up at Waikoloa, but that is north of Kailua-Kona. --- Jackie <jackiecorley@...> wrote: > We are going to Hawaii (the Big Island) the week of > April 4 with my 10- > year old with celiac. Guest guest
Please visit the Waimea Ranch House. We happened upon this restaurant and it was FABULOUS! The owners are the chefs (husband and wife team) and she has a food allergy so they were very understanding and accommodating. I hope to visit again some day. Guest guest
I'm not familiar with the Kona side, but a few things come to mind on the Hilo side. We are visiting there now for the Merrie Monarch hula fest, so we have just begun checking things out.1. Island Naturals food store in HiloI talked with the daughter of the owner/buyer for the store. Her mother has several CS/CD friends, so she has a lot of GF foods in the store. The prices are sometimes higher/lower than Whole Earth on the mainland.2. Maui Tacos in Hilo"Pepe Vega" of Maui Tacos wrote me that everything was okay except the flour tortillas and the enchilada sauce.3. Hilo farmers market. Every Wednesday and Friday. Foods are mostly prepared by the people selling them, so they will tell you what you need to know about the ingredients.
