Guest guest
I never buy anything from the bulk bins that can’t be washed off (e.g, beans are ok, flours are not), especially if they are near or under the gluten products. I tried to get my HF store to separate the GF flour bulk bins, but then I saw that they dust the inside and outside of the bins with the same feather duster, one after another, thus insuring contamination. Unless you have a very well-controlled environment with educated and aware staff, I would not take a chance on any bulk bin, as there are so many likely contamination vectors. This makes things harder and more expensive. Bob’s Red Mill is a good resource for flours (you can order direct from them if you want larger amounts than the 1 lb bags they sell in the stores), just make sure that what you order is specifically marked gluten-free. I've visited Rainbow, and they have a lot of gluten-fee flours in bulk at good prices. Unfortuantely, many of the gf flours are next to or under bins of gluten-containing flours. Have any of you bought bulk flours there? Or did you think the chance of cross-contamination too high? --Ruth Anne
