Guest guest
In-N-Out french fries are said to be GF. I think there's one in Richmond. Check their website. Jf they'd provide calorie-free, gluten-free french fries, I'd be there in a minute. H. In a message dated 2/9/08 9:53:33 AM, l@... writes: So, I was wondering where else in Berkeley has safe options? Guest guest
We like Bistro Liaison if you are careful – they will accommodate casein free/dairy free as well if they can. BayWolf and Oliveto’s also have some very nice dishes and I was not affected by CC – I think that I’m pretty sensitive to it. The duck confit cassoulet at BayWolf was wonderful! Cheap is just harder. For moderately priced: We had wonderful, GF times at SeaSalt on San Pablo and T.Rex on Gilman (both with the same executive chef – check their websites). I’m willing to try the other 3 places in this group of 5. OH, and our usual Thai place is Sasetha (which might not be spelled right) on Telegraph – we have talked with them extensively about gluten and they have been very accommodating, checking ingredient lists, etc. I can even get my Thai ice tea with coconut milk instead of evaporated cow’s milk. If you can do milk/dairy – Café La Paz is lovely. Connie From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Luther Sent: Saturday, February 09, 2008 9:53 AM Subject: [ ] GF restaurants in the Berkeley area I'm wondering what usual haunts in Berkeley people trust to eat at? Ironically I was never a big fan of Cafe Gratitiude even before I went GF... but my wife who is not GF loves it... hah, there's irony for ya. I was in there for a few minutes recently when my wife got take out and I asked them about GF -- they told me that can't actually guarantee that their kitchen in GF and one of the locations in SF is now doing sprouted wheat tortillas, but she thought most items on the menu would be fine. In any case, I have been eating at Picante's (6th / Gilman) and Cactus (top of Solano) without any trouble as long as I avoid the jalapenos (I guess they used canned ones that are in white vinegar) and of course avoid the flour tortillas. I haven't tried tostadas at either (I am suspicious they might be deep fried in CC oil), but the corn tortillas and chips seem to be fine. I actually spoke woth someone at Cactus and they do not seem to use any gluten-containing ingredients except for the obvious. I have also eaten at Ajanta -- the owner will tell you about all the ingredients and they have a separate tandoori oven for bread only. Most of the dishes are fine except some of the kofta (balls) and of course nothing deep fried (they don't have separate oil). There is an Indian take out place on Solano also, I guess that is in Albany, across from Safeway where High Tech burrito used to be, and I have eaten there several times without any trouble. For a special occasion we ate at Chez Panisse once and they were very accomodating. So, I was wondering where else in Berkeley has safe options? I am getting sick of eating Mexican. I am especially interested in some french fries and maybe Thai food. I was in Portland over the holidays and we went to a GF fish & chips place -- that's the only time I've had good french fries in the last year! Oh, does anyone know if the dosas at Vik's Chaat or at Udupi Palace are ok? Also I have read that a pizza place in Rockridge will do rice crust pizzas, but its hard to imagine the kitchen and oven aren't full in wheat flour, so has anyone actually tried this? -Luther
Guest guest
Of course! InNout! Great fries if you eat them hot! And Protein-Style burgers with or without cheese – the sauce is GF/CF. I’m not sure about the sautéed onions – they might be cooked with butter (probably oil) on the same grill that they brown the rolls on. Anyone know? Connie From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of flatcat9@... Guest guest
Onions are prepared on their own area, so the Animal Fries are GF except for the sauce, which may be subject to CC. Some people have had concerns about crumbs/ shared knives etc. I have seen them squirt the sauce (Safe) but also seen them use knives in a vat (not safe). If you get the In & Out fries plain they are absolutely GF, as are the milkshakes. I have yet to find fries that taste good cold, but I do feel way less gross after eating In and Out fries than McD's... eugh. - > > > > Of course! InNout! Great fries if you eat them hot! Guest guest
I definitely don't want to go down the Mcs road, but there has been extensive discussion of those fries on various message boards with the outcome being that major Celiac groups have tested them and found them to not contain detectable levels of gluten. The additive in the oil seems to be much like the gluten used in alcohol in that the gluten is distilled out of the final product and so may not pose a danger to Celiacs. Mcs changed their labeling standards thanks to new labeling laws but did not change the formula of the fries at all. That being said, they are certainly not good for you and some restaurants may not fry them in dedicated oil which presents a higher threat of gluten contamination. Personally, I only eat them when traveling overseas, and much prefer In and Out Fries as safer and healthier alternatives but some Celiacs are satisfied with the test results. Others prefer to avoid them, which is probably best for one's health anyway. My comment only referred to the nutritional grossness of the fries- but I am (too well, ugh) aware of the debate around this product. - I do > feel way less gross after eating In and Out fries than McD's... eugh. > > -
