smart monkeys are good, as are luna bars. how about corn chips? rice crackers/cakes? gluten free cereals in a ziplock bag? Consider South Asian snacksYesterday I looked at bags of dry snacks at one of our (many) local Indian grocery stores and bought a few. There are a variety of GF snacks composed of GF flours (chickpea, etc.), rice, puffed tapioca balls, nuts, lentils, spices, etc. Some are sweet, but most not very sweet, and some are very spicy.Nuts at Trader Joe's or Costco. Both have packages of nuts that are GF and loaded with calories.Cheers, >> Hi all,> > So I am getting the hang of being gluten free but find myself > struggling still with finding good portable snack foods to eat on the > go. I like the interesting ideas here. I go through phases personally,

because I also get sick of the same thing too often.

- Tiger bars (trader joe's and others), but they are pretty sweet

- there is another bar at TJ's that is GF and dairy free too but I

don't remember the name -- yellow package - its not bad

- nuts -- I buy a few different kinds at TJs (the nuts by themselves

are not processed on equipment shared with wheat, but the trail mixes

are) and then make my own nut mix, adding M & Ms sometimes

- if I am at client sites or travelling then I grab junk like doritos, etc.

- bananas

- i've on occasion packed carrot sticks and peanut butter

- cheese sticks if you can eat dairy

- raisins

- yogurt

- rice crackers (TJ's etc)

I like the indian snack idea but would be worried about CC and

accurate ingredients lists. My mother got glutened eating papadams

that had not gluten-containing ingredients. Another thing I have heard

about is some dried fruits imported having been processed with vinegar

but not being labelled as such...

Hi Kate--

Have you seen this snack list (attached) put together by one of the celiac groups? It's more oriented toward children, but it does give a good overview of the commercial gf snack products.

I love Kettle Korn myself as well as Lundberg rice chips and those new rice snaps chips (can't recall that brand but Whole Foods carries them).

I've enjoyed:

'Think Thin' bars (whole foods)

'Enjoy Life' snack bars (bought them at Whole foods, but now buy in bulk at Amazon.com)

I've also enjoyed the Special K protein water powder (comes in a single serve sleeve like Crystal Light).

on the go purchases, I tend to stick to potato chips (ugh) and fruit.

I really like this idea, but I do think that indian and other imported

snacks may have CC issues. There are several issues to consider- one,

the spices used will probably have been ground in mills that also

grind gluten-containing flour. Also, Asafoetida, a common spice (also

very often found in papadam) may be mixed with wheat flour (either

that or rice, but imported food labels will not generally break it

down for you). Finally, the snacks are often deep fried and that oil

may be shared with or also used for gluten snacks. They look good, but

it would probably be safer to make your own. Roasted chickpeas are

simple to make and tasty too. :)

Vinegar is not generally an issue unless it is malt vinegar because it

is ALL distilled and thus does not contain the gluten protein. Most

would not have been derived from any problematic grain source anyway.

I love taking a snack bag of 's Gone Crackers that can be found at

Whole Foods along with some string cheese. I think the crackers are

very tasty and they're full of whole grains, and adding some cheese

gives you protein to keep you satisfied until your next meal.

Also, Ensure nutrution drinks are great when you are on the run. I

don't know for sure if all the flavors are GF, but the chocolate flavor

states that it is gluten-free right on the side of the bottle.

Hope this helps!

"Sensible Snacks" are freeze-dried fruit or vegetables in appx 2 oz pkg (I don't remember for sure.)

They cost perhaps $2 in coffee shops, a bit less at Walgreens (pharmacy chain), and quite a bit less if you buy in quantitity from Amazon. There are several flavors -- orchard mix, berry mix, tropical mix, corn, etc.

They're a refreshing snack rather than a filling one.

Beef Jerky is non-sweet choice, depending on the brand. We

used to buy Shelton’s turkey jerky, but they changed recently and their

GF status was uncertain (let me know if you want the whole story about

this). They are the least sweet of the GF jerkys (very peppery flavor but

good) that I can think of. I have never seen them in a local store, I

have always ordered on line. Trader Joe’s has a GF jerky, but it is on

the sweet side; Oberto’s also has GF Jerky, again rather sweet.

Another great snack is Glad Corn; it is a type of popped

corn that is sort of in between corn nuts and pop corn in taste and texture; hard

to describe but great flavor. They can be ordered on line (GF Mall;

Amazon).

“Just the cheese” is baked cheese that comes in

little round disks (size of a dime) (2 oz package, which doesn’t sound

like much, but you won’t be able to finish it in one sitting) or bars (slightly

more expensive, but a better size for lunch bags if you want to finish it off

in one go and not have leftovers to save). These are very salty (even the

low salt version) and there are lots of flavors, but most of the flavors are

kind of the same. Order on line (GF Mall; Amazon)

A great non-sweet snack is Dry Roasted Edamame, which are a type

of soy bean. They have a crunchy texture and a nice mild flavor and aren’t

too salty. I used to get them from Trader Joe’s, but don’t

see them very often now days. I do see that you can get them on line as

well. http://www.nutsonline.com/snacksmixes/soybeans/dry-roasted.html

There are lots of crackers (’s Flax crackers,

and Sons, Glutino) as well as pretzels (don’t get the Ener-g ones that

are shaped like a circle; they are hideous: no one in our family would eat them)

that are available locally or on line. I noticed some interesting snack

crackers at the GF Mall (Pinnacle Gold veggie chips) but I haven’t tried

them.

There are also the traditional Lay’s potato chips which

are GF (if you are desperate) or Barbara’s cheese crunchies.

Hope this helps,

Pam

Hi all,

So I am getting the hang of being gluten free but find myself

struggling still with finding good portable snack foods to eat on the

go. I'm not a fan of most snack bars, like Lara Bars, b/c I find them

too sweet and/or tangy for my taste. I don't want anything too sweet

or sugary.

I know I can snack on nuts, fruits and veggies, but I can only do that

so often before it gets boring. Also, fruits and veggies often don't

have enough calories for me and I don't want to lose any more weight

so I am looking for something a little more substantial. I would like

to find a good snack food or bar, or even drink, that I can throw in

bag to have as a backup while I'm out.

Any and all recommendations are welcome!

Thanks in advance.
