Guest guest
Welcome, Ahroon. There is much to learn and things will definitely get better. Have you all gone gluten free? It is so much easier to have a gluten free zone at home – no cross contamination issues, no foods to be begged for and lots of modeling on how GF foods taste good. Cross contamination can be a really big issue – the wheat in soy sauce will cause reactions, a crumb of bread is a major assault on the gut, flour in the sugar canister will get her. Wooden spoons formerly used in the spaghetti pot, now used in the rice pasta pot will cause a reaction. Cutting boards, Teflon pans, flour dust in the cabinet. What did you and she eat before? What were her favorites? We can help you replace them with GF goodies. If she really likes some nutrient rich foods like meat and fruits and veggies then you are way ahead. If she has been acting like an addict to carbs then there are GF replacements, but you will need to help her move to a more nutritious diet overall. It can take awhile for the gluten to get out of her system – I found that in the beginning it took up to a week for accidental gluten to show up in symptoms so she may still be reacting to what she ate a week or more ago. PeptoBismol or Kaopectate can help somewhat. As can probiotics. How is she reacting to milk and milk products? Some of us lose the ability to digest milk sugars when the gut is harmed by gluten. Some of us react to the milk proteins in the same way that we react to gluten. Are you still nursing her or is she on formula? Nursing should continue if you are, but you need to stop eating gluten. If she is on formula, you might want to check on that, although soy formula can be just as much of an allergen as dairy or wheat. There are a number of that will help. You might want to try the one called GFCFNN – lots of moms there with the same issues and lots of help. We just got the Celiac Diagnosis last week for our 18 month old girl. This has been a rough period, both leading up to the diagnosis as well as this week. She has been gluten free for almost a week and it seems like she is getting worse not better. She has less of an appetite then she did before. She still throws up almost once a day. She is very irritable and wants to be carried all of the time. And she just seems to be getting so thin. How quickly did other folks see an improvement? Any tricks to get her to eat more? She was always a very picky eater and really won't try new foods. Any advise/thoughts for an anxious mom of a newly diagnosed toddler. Thanks for your help. Guest guest
Hi, that sounds so frustrating! I believe my 15mo has Celiac, but we don't have a diagnosis yet. My 5 year old got her biopsy confirmed diagnosis two weeks ago. I took both kids (and myself, since the baby is nursing) off gluten at the same time. Neither had typical symptoms, though, so I can't really answer about time to improvement. Have you read _Kids with Celiac Disease_ yet? http://tinyurl.com/2d8x9f I found it fairly informative. I'm continually amazed by the things that have gluten in them that completely slip through my initial pantry cleanout - fruit snacks, chipotles in adobo sauce, asefetida.... it is everywhere! I just got rid of our gluten-y toaster, wooden spoons, and plastic mixing bowls... So many changes! (As an aside, does anyone know if silicone bakeware is on the needs to be replaced list? I love my little Le Creuset silicone muffin pans...) I'd be happy to talk kid snacks and things with you. What kinds of food does she like? There's a local group for celiac kids, too: bayareaceliacROCK, though it is pretty low traffic so far. Good luck and I hope she starts to feel better soon - On Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 8:25 PM, Ahroon Yoch <ahroonyoch@...> wrote: > > > > > > > > Hi, > > I am so happy to see that this group exists. Guest guest
I'd like to also recommend the forums @ celiac.com (The forum itself is at www.glutenfreeforum.com ) There seems to be a large group of moms there, and besides all the other useful sub-forums, one is TITLED " Parents of celiac children " . I sure you'd find loads of useful info, not to mention get many replies to any specific questions when you start a thread. ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile.
