Guest guest
They put white wheat flour in their injera as do most of the Ethiopian restaurants around here. And injera is the “plate” you eat from. I’ve managed a very tasty GF meal at Pizziola just down the street although the cross contamination is an issue there as they make their pizzas from scratch. Donna Tomas near Pizziola is high end Mexican, but the chips are fried in the same fryer as the flautas with the wheat tortillas but you might be able to put a GF meal together. We took GF soy sauce to Takahara (used to be a different name Isusobon?) Sushi on College and had a lovely meal – Ben, one of the Sushi Chefs, made me a California roll with real crab – I have not had one of those for years and years – fake crab is held together with wheat starch. Ben really got the GF issues – he almost started to make it and then caught himself and really washed down his countertop, washed the rice paddle, got me a new avocado since the ones already cut seemed to have some soy sauce on them, etc. I was so impressed! We bought him a beer as a thank you. I'll be going there with friends tomorrow afternoon, if anyone has had any experience with the restaurant please let me know! In any event, I won't eat the bread and I'll have my own bread-free plate to avoid contamination. The restaurant is on Telegraph and 61st in Oakland. If anyone knows of any reliable gluten-free restaurants that are also soy-free right around there that are open for dinner I'd really appreciate knowing about them. If there are good options maybe I can convince my friends to change their plans. Thanks!
Guest guest
Wow, glad you weren't glutened at Pizziola. A family member is one of the chefs there and I would never risk it personally even though I hear the food is fabulous. As you say the flour from making the pizzas is always in the air and therefore settling on other things so cross contamination is very likely. Guess I am more conservative about taking risks since I was so very ill before going gluten free. Glad the food was tasty and you didn't get sick. Guest guest
Well, it was only once, early in the day and I mostly had salad. I have not chanced it again, but at least I was not faced with the meal sitting on bread. Does anyone know of any stores near burg, PA that stock GF food? I have to go to a family reunion and just don’t know the area. Guest guest
You might want to log into and search the archive -- someone had a report on an Ethopian restaurant they went to last year I think that was very accomodating -- I think it was one of the ones on Telegraph. Let me know how it works out. I love Ethiopian food -- I used to go Cafe Coulluci a lot before I went GF. That's the one at Alcatraz and Telegraph I think - across from Jack in the box. I'd been thinking about giving it a try again without the bread but haven't mustered up the energy to ask questions about ingredients yet. -L On Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 1:56 PM, julie_mueller <julie_mueller@...> wrote: > Have any of you tried eating at Addis Ethiopian Restaurant in Oakland? > I'll be going there with friends tomorrow afternoon, if anyone has had > any experience with the restaurant please let me know!
